  • I agree it sucks but at least you have that option considering the nature of the Lemmy project.

  • Upload limits depend on the instance. I would have suggested PT if you wanna self host, or the other two you mentioned if you just want to sign on. Promoting then so that people will watch them is probably the hardest part unless you wanna pay for promotion.

  • What you're describing is a blog. Writefreely is just one of many examples of a federated blog, and WordPress now has this function built-in after aquiring the ActivityPub plugin.

  • Never heard of GNU Taler, just looked into it. Looks like there's no way to use it without exchanging existing money into electronic money. I guess some form of crypto is still the next best thing. Someone pointed out that Ether is no longer mined but staked, which makes a huge difference from an environmental standpoint, something like over 99% reduction in emissions from its mining days. Unfortunately the privacy of Monero is not there. Bartering has its uses as well, but I would argue that bartering can take even more steps to actually get what you want than a common crypto exchange.

As far as your optimism of a socialist/communist/anarchist society coming about anytime soon, I wish you luck but I don't see that happening.

  • What would you suggest then as currency so as not to be involved with central banking? I don't mean in a socialist future, but the here and now.

  • Until crypto gets serious about addressing its environmental impact I have a hard time jumping on board. As far as I know Monero is better than most, but still enthusiasts tend to hand wave away the energy concerns.

  • Matrix for a few years now. Proxying it correctly is the only difficult part.

  • I have a native install on a Debian LXC - 16GB storage, 2GB RAM and 1 core, that I've been running for over 2 years behind nginx. Doesn't need much. If you want to record via Jibri, you need more juice. I will be redoing my install as they now offer an all in one Docker stack with recording capabilities. With the native install it is recommended to have a separate Ubuntu 18.04 server for Jibri just for recording, which is a hassle and outdated.

I haven't begun the Docker setup yet, but I imagine it has to be a more pleasant experience to admin.

  • I have the 4GB model. It's a really nice little board for the price. Currently have Debian 12 installed. I have the Orange Pi camera module and am using it in conjunction with the board, OpenCV, and a wild bird model data set to detect different kinds of birds outside my window at the bird feeder. I don't have a desktop installed so I can't speak to that. I'd say judging by the pics it's about 50% accurate so far. The graininess of the photos from the camera module and the distance from the bird feeder have a lot to do with the poor performance. Using a higher end USB camera should help with this.

A big bonus with this board is it has 4 temp sensors, and you will need them. Like all OPi boards, heat is an issue. You will need sinks and active cooling if you would like to use this for extended periods of time without roasting it.

  • What's stopping your own home instance from doing the same?

  • For mobile it's the front end for Invidious, Clipious.

  • @MagneticFusion@lemm.ee the video you posted doesn't allow embedding. Here's the error message "This video contains content from Ligue de Football Professionnel, who has blocked it from display on this website or application"

The age restriction bypass for invidious uses an embed client. Here's an age restricted video that works fine with invidious, because it allows embedding: https://youtu.be/VxhRnfi6yyE
