  • Nintendo is why DRM is a thing. The NES CIC lockout chip avoided the 2600's shovelware problem... and created an abusive monopoly, that generation.

Nintendo secretly had color screens developed for the upcoming Game Boy, switched to black & white, and left the screen manufacturer hung out to dry. Which is why the Game Gear and Lynx coincidentally have the same resolution.

Nintendo was politely informed by SNK that they'd be making their own handheld. A year later the Game Boy Color dropped as a secret fuck-you to the Neo Geo Pocket.

Nintendo informed Sony they had cancelled their SNES-CD add-on by announcing an SNES-CD add-on made by Philips. At the Consumer Electronics Show. After Sony's big presentation about their SNES-CD add-on.

  • People, their service has material costs, and the fee is minuscule.

This is a completely above-board business model. This is not the bottomless pit of "microtransactions" that needs to become illegal. It's how you're supposed to fund a thing that costs money to run.

  • Conservatism doesn't mean right-wing. It's reality as a team sport.

Reasoned argument is a learned behavior. This nonsense is humanity's default.

They think that's all you're doing, because they think that's all there is.

  • Honestly I hate how much I hold back, now. Too many communities fell for the cult of civility and think "here's detailed proof that you're a fucking liar" is worse behavior than "calm down, honey." Sometimes it is right and good to call people names. Punishing that, but not even addressing why someone might do that, is acting as a force multiplier for trolls. You can be an absolute monster in polite words.

To all moderators, on all platforms, I ask - if you don't stop people from being assholes, but you stop people from calling them assholes, who do you think benefits from that power structure?

  • It's a mantra about teaching people and then expecting them to forget it. Doesn't work. They'll default to what they already know.

My freshman English teacher got married in October and I called her by her maiden name the entire year.

Like all programming mantras, it's not universally true, but it's annoyingly reliable. It reflects the shape of the human brain.

  • For many companies, profits have soared during the past decade as they found novel, compulsively designed ways of monetizing ardent fans in games like Candy Crush Saga and Genshin Impact, actively encouraging them to spend their money on in-game perks.

What a flowery description of greedy manipulation.
