What can the 'average Joe' start hosting, that will change their life?

  • It makes sense in terms of reproducibility.

    Imagine if your server gets compromised, you accidentally break it, or you just want to move to a cheaper provider or a different server. Do you want to have to tweak it all over again, and fix bugs that you figured out how to fix 6 months ago and you don't remember?

    I'd rather have some yaml files that do it for me. And it's a new skill as well.

  • Docker is definitely worth the time investment.

    If OP wants to go one level deeper: Ansible.

    • In your opinion, which FOSS software is by many considered "old" or "obsolete", but are in fact, in your opinion, in many ways better than the newer alternatives?

  • Probably even with a CS degree.

    It's just a hassle to maintain, and too mission critical to have it go down.

    I wonder if the same won't happen with the fediverse, if we let some instances get too large.

  • Agree on RSS.

    Don't have enough experience with XMPP.

    IRC is not a secure protocol, I think matrix takes the cake there. (although I really miss IRC)

    Lemmy and Reddit do have an upvote feature and aggregation across different topics / communites, which I think it's what old school forums lacked.

    • With the decline of twitter and reddit, it's time to take a look at RSS again if you haven't already.

  • It's not ad-friendly, and does not force you to create yet another account in yet another walled garden for big-tech to collect your data.

    Also, does anyone know what Moxie might get involved with? He's quite the interesting character (go watch his sailing documentary if you haven't already).
