There's the base vs code source code, which microsoft takes, adds a bunch of tracking, compiles it, and distributes that binary. If you compiled vs code yourself from source, you would not get the same executable.
A bit like chrome, because i'm pretty sure chrome isn't open source, chromium is. Could be wrong on that.
Do you realise the absurdity of that last sentence ? Do you really think we should prevent the rich from getting away with whatever by taking a bit of their money ?
Not going against Gnome here, but against your last sentence.
As long as they give the user the ability to opt out/in, what's the harm in introducing it?
Pretty sure systemd did this with a lot of things and started removing things they just didn't like. Can't find the website I wanted to link, but it included a lot of reasons why systemd isn't good (for example, binary logging. Why ?) "You can always opt out" doesn't work in the real world ; people don't care enough to switch. Why do you think google is the biggest search engine ? Mainly because it's the default everywhere.
In this context I guess it doesn't matter (and I couldn't see myself using gnome, even if it has some good polish), it's just that "you can always opt out" leaves a bad taste on my tongue.
A clunky UI - which is far, far too common on open source applications
So, what are you going to do about it ? Contribute ? Learn the ins and outs of gimp, and propose some UI changes ? And if you don't have time to do that, who does / who cares enough for that ?
People who code stuff like GIMP generally don't really care for UI, or have the time. They're volunteers, passionate people. Not designers.
That's also a broad generlization. Firefox has bad UI/UX ? (Sometimes yeah on some niche things but I wholeheartedly believe google is at fault somehow)
What about Krita ? Blender has been doing UI work last I heard of it, so that's also that. Paint.net was also open source. Chromium has bad UI ? Android ? Vs Code ? GNOME ? KDE ? Element ? Jitsi ? Signal ? Wordpress ?
Yeah, gimp sucks. And the type of people who are "linux elitists", that tell you you suck for not enjoying bad UI, also suck. But why not make a meaningful change to the world ? Try to hope for a world where GIMP is actually usable ?
Honestly ? I think gender is such a stupid ass concept. Like you looked at people, made the (reasonable, though simplistic) assumption that there are two genders, okay, fine enough. But now, turns out everybody is different, society is complicated, all kinds of genders pop up, as do sexualities, and guess what it's a fucking spectrum and nobody falls in those stupid little cases, nobody is truly "heterosexual" no man loves "just the concept of a woman". It's all made up, all stupid little words that are just here to mean "i generally prefer [something]".
It's frustrating. I used to define myself as straight, but turns out I've felt pretty gay multiple times in my life, going far back, and I don't feel "100% straight" right now. Hell, some times I don't even feel like a dude. How do I define that ? I don't want to define it. I feel like all the "noo people are not just man or woman" just created more boxes for people to put themselves into, except it's "NEW box(tm)".
I know some of these boxes are useful, especially sexualities. But everytime I see the word "gender" something inside me makes me want to not read whatever words are nearby.
By saying you don't care about your privacy, you're willingly ignoring any downsides. You're saying that you, or a close one, will never do anything your government might disagree with, even in the future. Governments change, people can be in charge you never thought should be, and some people might not like what you do, whatever that could be. (I'm having a hard time explaining this one, words don't come easily rn, see edward snowden "Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide, is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say.")
By contributing your data, you're helping other, less "fun" countries discriminate against people. It's really easy to guess using algorithms if someone is gay, had premarital sex, etc. And some people don't like some others based on that, and would rather they were dead.
Do you just have nothing to say
