If your choices are a function of prior events and an emergent property of complex but deterministic processes where does agency come in? We are a complex deterministic process that simulates our own self to both predict a much more complex unconscious self and write rules to influence it going forward.

We call this process being conscious even when its writing just so stories after the fact.

People are locked up all the time for just possessing child porn without having abused anyone. This isn't a bad thing because they are a danger to society.

We won't invade Canada

I wish I could just be a Canadian and worry about going to work and going to the doctor and normal risks and not whether I can even get care or if the country around me is going to collapse around me.

I work in Seattle and live near it.

Our EC votes here in WA went for the Harris. I told everyone who would listen offline and online in this state and in other states why we shouldn't vote for Trump.

I am working or commuting to work 60 hours a week and we are losing our health insurance. I'm already scrambling. If I showed up in a city which 60%+ of the pop agrees with me and held a sign for a few hours it wouldn't change a goddamn thing except get some honks and nods for sympathetic folks who also feel this way.

More than the probably unactionable threat of invading Canada I'm worried about the following in no particular order of importance.

• Not being able to get meds for my sick wife
• Health care collapsing in America
• Our economy collapsing
• A trade war with our neighbors and allies you know folks like Canada
• People going hungry here
• People dying of hunger overseas without the aid we used to provide
• Vaccination and public health collapsing followed by potentially worse threats than covid like a deadly flu pandemic if the bird flu adapts to us well enough to explode without adapting enough to avoid massive fatalities. Note there is no reason to believe this would leave other countries unscathed
• Ukraine being ground under Putin's toes because they won't give it and allies like us abandon them with millions dying and tens of millions living under occupation
• Almost 2M of which half are children in Gaza being murdered in the course of driving them from their homes
• Trump allowing Putin's aggression to get way out of hand and then trying to play savior thus kick starting WW3
• A nuclear apocalypse
• Climate change being impossible to reverse because we are so far behind that it doesn't matter what we do if we decide to make changes 20 years from now instead of today. Also factors that seem to suggest this may get much worse much faster than earlier thought like the amount of CO2 sequestered dropping off or the Clathrate gun hypothesis
• Mirror life being way to attractive to stupid people as bio weapons to stupid people despite a host of scientists coming out against even peaceful research in that direction
• Taiwan going to war with China and chip production dealing a further blow to the economy since it will take literal years for us to replace Taiwan for complex chips
• Not being able to vote Trump out of power in 2026 2028 because they don't let us
• Trump rounding up millions of people into migrant camps but not being able to deport them very quickly leading to multi year detention of immigrants in hostile concentration camps that ultimately become death camps

Literally every issue here is more likely than us invading Canada. It's not that I don't care about Canada. It's not that I don't emphatically disagree with Canada's treatment. I just can't do a goddamn thing.

Ok watch adult porn then watch a movie in which women or children are abused. Note how the abuse is in no way sexualized exactly opposite of porn. It often likely takes place off screen and when rape in general appears on screen between zero and no nudity co-occurs. For children it basically always happens off screen.

Simulated child abuse has been federally illegal for ~20 years in the US and we appear to have very little trouble telling the difference between prosecuting pedos and cinema even whilst we have struggled enough with sexuality in general.

But ultimately the issue will become that there is no way to prevent it.

This argument works well enough for actual child porn. We certainly don't catch it all but every prosecution takes one more pedo off the streets. The net effect is positive. We don't catch most car thieves either and nobody suggests we legalize car theft.

Notably you are free to fantasize about whatever you like its the actual creation and sharing of images that would be illegal. You haven't met a statistically valid sample of the population nor compiled anything but a vague recollection.

Imagine if someone had cancer on the one hand they had a study that showed that the 5 year survival rate of 1000 patients was 4x higher with chemo and you said no bro I know 3 people who got cancer and that ate gluten free and they are all 3 alive today! 3 people is not a random sample. You weren't involved in their treatment. You don't know what the surrounding factors are. You don't know what kind of cancer they had etc etc etc.

I linked to an actual survey of a statistically valid sample of folks. The rebuttable presumption is that that is an accurate assessment of the overall population. It's an actually scientific assessment, Against this your "life experience" is basically your vague notion that both things exist and although you can't possibly actually count them therefore they must somehow somewhat be equal because they appear equal in magnitude. This is like holding up your hand and noting that it covers your view of the Eiffel Tower and concluding without measuring or even thinking about how to measure that your hand and the tower are equal in size whilst totally ignoring that you could trivially take out a ruler and look up the size of the tower on Wikipedia.

Let's play devils advocate. You find Bob the pedophile with pictures depicting horrible things. 2 things are true.

1. Although you can't necessarily help Bob you can lock him up preventing him from doing harm and permanently brand him as a dangerous person making it less likely for actual children to be harmed.
2. Bob can't claim actual depictions of abuse are AI generated and force you to find the unknown victim before you can lock him and his confederates up. If the law doesn't distinguish between simulated and actual abuse then in both cases Bob just goes to jail.

A third factor is that this technology and the inherent lack of privacy on the internet could potentially pinpoint numerous unknown pedophiles who can even if they haven't done any harm yet be profitably persecuted to societies ultimate profit so long as you value innocent kids more than perverts.

But we don't all fall for that
