  • web Devs aren't ignorant to optimizing but the kind of interfaces used in web are very different to that of desktop. Cross platform technologies can work, but anything built on top of web engines is going to be a little dogshit on native platforms.

Web tech was designed around the asynchronous and comparatively slow nature of the network. Now, those same layout and rendering engines are being shoehorned into an environment where the "server" is your local disk so it's suddenly doing a bunch of work that was intended to be done iteratively.

Same goes the other way of course. Software designed for "native first" experiences like Flutter aren't as popular in web dev because they work on that same, but reversed, assumption of a local disk being your source.

It would be like wondering why physical game disks aren't popular on PC - it's a fundamentally different technology for fundamentally different expectations and needs.

  • I know people complain about Nvidia and Linux but one of the best parts of my experience with it was never having to deal with GFE. Just a bunch of project managers trying to make themselves useful by shovelling needless slop into your GPU driver.

  • Even the stuff in the "immutable" section isn't necessarily wiped, it's more that there is a strong chance changes may be overwritten. I'd definitely make no guarantees to anything stored on the immutable sections of SteamOS.

  • It boots into Game scope (as others said, it's not "big picture mode" it's a compositor stack tailored for high gaming performance) but it's nothing more than an immutable arch distribution (and immutability can be disabled for tweaking) so you could definitely swap the defaults if someone has documented how.

Would be a nice feature to have once SteamOS becomes independent of the deck.

  • It's the right thing to do. Windows isn't nearly as stable or reproducible as a testing platform anymore and I imagine it's a PITA to handle for benchmarking dozens of not hundreds of hardware configs.

Of course they'll still do those Windows tests, not suggesting they won't, but Linux may become a more useful benchmarking platform for reviewers thanks to the control and automation it provides.

A whole host of configurations can be quickly booted and tested on a benchmark suite to confirm performance of older hardware and provide context, whilst newer products can get a bespoke review on all platforms. If a new benchmark game comes out, it'll be way easier to insert into the Linux setups than Windows.

  • It's not even like Linux is that much better in terms of UI/UX but being able to control the user experience with fine grain controls the way it's done on SteamOS/other distros is a massive advantage. All other Windows handhelds are stuck with some poor imitation of a gamepad-compatible shell.

  • Suddenly I'm very interested. I know you can install HoloISO or whatever distro you want but some first party support for drivers is gonna be awesome.

Lenovo's handheld was probably the one that was most appealing versus the Steamdeck - Similar control scheme, good specs, but included detachable controllers which is one thing I wish the deck had after coming from the Switch. It makes coop/party games easier, and there's more maintainability when you don't have to gut the internals for a single joystick.

  • I mean they should've started their attacks on Tel Aviv and northern settlements again to draw the IDF into a fight on their southern flank. though with said flank under defended by Israelis ATM they could probably kick them out of the remaining occupied towns in S. Lebanon.

They wouldn't need to engage in Syria beyond maybe cross border attacks on IDF troops and convoys if they were taking this threat seriously. Either way it's clear Israel intends to bypass the southern fortresses and break the ceasefire deal very soon

  • Seeing this move should've immediately sent Hezbollah to break the ceasefire, at least if they're interested in not letting Israeli forces flank their metaphorical Maginot line by going through a neutral-but-defenseless country.
