  • Theres this tendency to completely ignore the effects of peer pressure and habituation and culture and very scary men with guns pointing them at you in these arguments, and its deeply bullshit.

We tend to treat a hyper-competitive hyper-alienating authoritarian context as some sort of fundamental trait of humanity, rather than some shit we work very very hard to maintain.

And its nonsense? And I can prove it. I prefer deliberate rhizomatoc organization; its more efficient long term, but I can prove spontaneous organizing happens anywhere it isnt actively shut down, and I'll show you, in a totally non-ideological context: go to any beach, and dig a hole. Just pick a spot and start digging. Watch what happens. Nothings wrong, nobody's in trouble, its not even really for anything, and you'll have more help than you can use.

I could theorize why (being on a team feels good. Doing things is a primal joy. People generally want things to get done, etc) but the fact is; it happens, and tryimg to find reasons why it can't be the basis of a social order, or at least disaster response; seems very unnecessarily pessimistic.

anything big enough just stops working and you need a charismatic authority figure to be in charge

That's a failure if your organizing systems. Read more (managerial and information) theory? Seriously though; hierarchal systems do not scale. Spontaneous horizontal systems don't either, but you do realize there are deliberate horizontal systems, right? That you can apply going in or retrofit to an existing organization?

representative democracy seems to work if its set up right

Real representative democracy has never been tried? No true Scotsman? Because I'm not seeing one, and if you are, you need (new) glasses.

    hopefully its here to stay

Oh honey. I... Maybe some acid would help this go down easier. I'm here for a hug if you need it.

  • Proton making Linux better for gaming, which was the biggest excuse for holdouts. Steam deck showing you could not only game on Linux, but do so while sitting in a tree, with long term support implied by show of confidence from a large corporation.

    Windows steepened its enshittification spiral.

The pandemic put a lot of people in a more experimental space, and they tried a lot of shit. And a lot of people picked up new skills. Including Linux 101.

And people saw authority in general start failing in a big ways. A lot of people started questioning shit. Including corporate hegemonies.

  • You're saying I'm saying 'religion is x'

I'm generally saying 'religion tends towards x' so two twins, one raised religious, one not, you could end up with anything.

A hundred sets of twins, one in each set religious, the other not influenced by it at all; the religious ones, on average, are gonna suck more, but only on average.

I do think the concept that 'the world doesn't matter because its temporary and only heaven matters, therefore anything is permissible' is terrifying, and should get you kept away from sharp objects heavy machinery and any position of authority over anything. There are a few specific points doctrine about beliefs like that, that only show up without religion in cases of extreme mental illness, and I think can skew the average of how shit people are, but they tend to differ even between people sitting on the sane pew.

You seem very intent on picking fights about this though, and the things youre arguing against are not the ones I have said. (Some I believe, some I don't, some you could maybe stretch to being a straw man of something I believe). You don't seem to really be arguing with me here, and me engaging with what you say seems to be mostly ignored. Are you okay?

  • No, but claiming you understand the idea well enough to argue it because you read the back cover is some "imagine a perfectly spherical organism... ...and now ive solved it, why do you even have a whole department?" first year physics student walking into a bio lab level arrogance.

I don't even think you understand the principles and ideas that would make your idea of optimal social structure even remotely plausible, much less what I'm talking about with mine (given your unwillingness to even acknowledge them), and you clearly don't want to. Its not like youre going to tell me anything I haven't heard before. I feel like it's a good time for this conversation to end.

  • He was though? He was absolutely not a fascist, which is what we mean when we say 'conservative' today, but if you put him in white face, or included some 'magically not be racist' in your 'magically bring back the dead' spell, onald Reagan and Winston Churchill would've both adored him.
