The thing I noticed right out of the gate when I went slumming on Threads is that the Android app package is 77MB. Compare that to Mastodon at 2.5MB.
Two apps that (from the user's perspective) do pretty much the same thing - make queries to servers and display pieces of text on the screen, maybe with some pictures or videos. Not that hard.
So what does that extra 74MB of bloat in the Threads app do? Meta's not telling us...
I think it depends on the particular volcanoes. The volcanoes in Iceland and Hawaii, IIRC, have thinner and less gassy magma, so there's not as much gas buildup, and the eruptions tend to have more liquid lava. Elsewhere, say Mt. St. Helens, the eruptions tend to have thick lava, with lots of trapped gas inside, that tend to cause giant explosions, pyroclastic flows & big ash clouds.
Anyways, I don't want to sound condescending, but thought you might be curious - seeing that Lemmy is open source, I found Lemmy's Hot algorithm in the documentation. A bit more complicated than I thought it was, but the math's pretty straightforward.
I'm not perfect as far as password opsec goes, but I did indeed use a randomly generated unique password here.
Hell, even if your password safe is only what's built into Firefox or Chrome, that's still better than using easy-to-guess passwords or sharing passwords.
Smart sort could be fun to implement. One could set up Bayesian filtering, or Markov chains, similar to spam filtering, set to promote posts that are similar to posts you've upvoted.
Or one could train a neural network (though that may require too much computing power).
I agree, visibility is key. No mystery algorithms!
That and I worry about algorithms that are engagement-based - we don't want feeds that devolve into rage-porn and constant pie-fights. You're right, some of these algorithms have side-effects...
