  • It’s not that surprising, I think it shows the huge disconnect between what these institutions think the do for people and what they really do.

They assumed they were providing moral/spiritual guidance but in reality most people were coming to them because they were the only affordable source of community in the area. Another example of a point of community organizing would be something like a board game/table top store, but those are often expensive to participate in as they have a lot of over head that needs to be payed for. Churches of course were not free to run but they had a huge leg up by being tax exempt, not to mention had a lot of people willing to work for them for low wages out of passion for the topic. So they could get by on small volunteer donations.

So churches could survive in areas where something like a mall, or game store, a book shop or some other type of focused community couldn’t due to there not being enough people with the means to participate.

Now though, the effective monopoly that kept these churches popular has been broken, as anyone with a cellphone can go on to the internet and participate in community that way. Is it the same quality of experience? Is something being lost through purely digital community? Maybe, maybe not, but theses religious institutions have become so divorced from the interests and needs of their constituents that even a pale imitation has been able to absorb their audience in less than a couple decades.

  • The republicans looked at the polling numbers and writing on the wall and saw this was not going to win them any support from people they didn’t already have support from…

But there is a hard line group that is probably flipping their shit right now because they don’t care, they just want to burn everything down. I don’t suspect the republican’s current coalition can survive this kind of internal disagreement for long

  • From the wording it sounds like they only got foreign residuals on streaming, not US. Given that one of the biggest points of the strike was that writers weren’t getting payed residuals for streaming (which is increasingly the main market) it does seems like a fairly big concession.

Admittedly the biggest issue was that streaming services are shockingly opaque about viewership numbers. There doesn’t really seem to be an industry standard for what counts as a “view”. Does someone scrolling past a video and it auto playing 2 seconds count as a view, does someone watching 90% through than going to the next episode count as a view?

To agree to paying residuals on shows would require admitting to what people are actually watching on their services. They really seem to not want to do that. Probably because most of what they’re hyping up or promoting is failing in real terms and they want to keep massaging the numbers.

So the compromise is they’ll do it for exports but not domestic. Maybe because they can waffle on the reasons for failure in the foreign markets but it is harder to do that domestically.

  • Look, they gotta replace the last batch of kids they just sent in to the meat grinder some how…

Also, probably a tactic of ethnic cleansing, physically remove the next generation from an area and you basically guarantee an end to a group of people there in a few decades.

Potentially also a hostage tactic, like, all those kids could certainly be a bargaining chip in negotiations at the end of the war.

All and all, pretty fucked, and further proof that the current Russian government is beyond rotten to the core. The current Russian government is clearly not one that can be treated as anything but a criminal terrorist state.

  • I mean, it looks pretty, but not being able to fold it up really is a non-starter. Like, even if you have a secure charging dock like they claim, if you have to go in somewhere where you don’t have a dock for an extended period of time (like an office) it would be way to easy for someone to pick a lock or just bolt cut it, then walk off with it.

  • I mean, it also depends on how reliable the engine is in regards to relighting, also wether or not it has a way to settle the fuel before firing. Might be easier just to have a few small solid rocket engines added to the stage to give it enough oomph to get it to aero capture in a reasonable amount of time. Admittedly this would probably require extensive testing to ensure that load of the deorbit motor is spread in a way that won’t just shred the stage.

Or maybe they just use some engines on the satellite to get it in to it’s final orbit and release it from the upper stage while the upper stage is in an orbit that will decay fast enough to be considered acceptable.

  • I don’t care what the classification is, I love beans. I love ‘em canned, I love ’em dried and pressure cooked, I love ‘em baked, I love ‘em on toast, I love ‘em in a chili (don’t @ people with strong opinions about beans in chili), and I love ‘em in a tortilla.

  • Could make pasta sauces, like bolognese, and freeze them, then make some pasta when you want it, like 9-8 minutes. Could also pre cook the pasta although I’ve never be a fan of reheated pasta. Hell, maybe could make a pasta dish and freeze the whole thing. Not exactly a soup, but i suspect pasta and pasta sauce evolved from soup.

  • Do they not realize how absurd it is to be relying on … used car loans as a back up investment? Like, used cars are a diminishing asset, prone to destruction in accidents, picked up by low income consumers.

Like, the only thing that holds up that market is the fact that modern infrastructure and suburban layout basically requires ownership of a car.

Why are these people allowed to be investing money? Why the hell are they in charge of anything if they are dumb enough to think used fucking car loans are a good and stable long term investment?!

It’s one thing to be malicious, predatory and smart, to have malicious, predatory and stupid people running things is just a sign of a failing system.

  • Stainless should work just fine. Cast iron too.

I find stainless steel to be great for searing things or when I’m not to worried about sticking, things like meats, chunky veggies (Brussel sprouts, potatoe chucks) will stick until their surface has lost most of it’s moisture or broken down the proteins enough. This can actually super useful as it’s a great way to tell when one side of something is “done” getting some nice color on it.

Cast iron (or carbon steel if you want something a bit lighter) is much less sticky and will last multiple generations. Great for scrambled eggs or anything you don’t want sticking. So long as there are multiple layers of baked on oil it’ll be nearly as stick resistent as any fancy non-stick pan (the hydrophobic ends of the oil molecule end up bonding to each other and the iorn to form layers of a patina/polymer that resists sticking and sheds water).

Frankly I’m quite skeptical of non-stick pans in general, a lot of them have moved away from Teflon because of the serious issues surrounding it, but the replacements they’ve introduced are not exactly well vetted and I’m not exactly trusting of the chemical industry to do their do diligence after Teflon and C8.

  • You may be able to verify that a given code is correct, or that a given device is correct, but no amount of software can conclusively prove that a given person has voted. All that cryptography prevents is a man in the middle attack, it does not prevent bad inputs from being entered by people who have stolen credentials.

Voting should be easy and convenient, but paper ballots and voting booths can be easy and convenient.

  • The problem is how difficult it is to ensure it is open and verifiable. Not to mention how much easier it is to scale up attacks on digital voting systems.

If I want to forge enough paper ballets to swing an election I’m going to need a few hundred people in on it, with a group that large, someone is going to squeal, or get caught doing something dumb and uncover the conspiracy, if I want to forge digital ballots, well, I just need one person with know how and the right exploit.

It is certainly possible to make a digital voting system that is immutable once the votes are submitted, it is nearly impossible to make one that ensures that the votes being submitted are legitimate.

It’s a lot of effort and increased risk to roll out an acceptable electronic voting system, it is much easier and safer to just keep using paper ballots.

  • No one is asking you to celebrate them, people are just asking you not to make their existence or mentioning them illegal. That’s step one to in a path to another holocaust.

Do you not see that they’re pulling the wool over your eyes to cover up the continued consolidation of corporate power? This culture war bullshit is just a distraction and a way for them to tighten the screws of authoritarian control.

Next thing they’ll be arguing they need to prevent anonymity on the web to fight the “gay agenda” or that they need to be able to search people’s homes for “gay propoganda” without a warrant.
