  • Whoa! Dude, lol! Now I kinda want to hear reggae sped up to a ska-like BPM, and ska slowed down to a relaxing reggae-like BPM.

  • Thank you. To be quite honest, I've had a roommate once who loved reggae and ska, and even though I don't know the names of the songs nor the artists, I kinda like the entire vibe of it. Not that I'd want to listen to it all day though, but a bit of it in a day's listening makes my day a bit brighter, if that even makes sense.

I might have been guilty of wrongfully associating ska with reggae though, and to be fair, I couldn't even distinguish one from the other.

  • Unfortunately, in the same breath as that mention is them saying erasing that is the work of users. There's enough evidence to suggest it's the admin's handiwork. Some people elsewhere mentioned that those "random" dots do not have a user attached to it.

  • I admittedly know nothing about Ska, and music genres more generally, and whatever little searching I did upon reading this post have given me nothing that I can digest.

However, I've read a discussion about hate for ska coming from cultural appropriation and being liked by teenage boys. Can someone walk me through this?

  • Thanks for that mental image of a girl using a turkey baster as a dildo and jizz as lube of some sort.

  • Tuergog the half-elf, half-orc bard looked around at the mesmerized faces of his audience, bowed, and exited the stage with thunderous applause.

He's just finished the tale of his origin, a mainstay of his performances. He's been on a journey, tavern after tavern, recounting tale after tale, but always ending with this story. How his parents have fought battles, literal and figurative, to be together. How he, the product of such a union, have struggled with who he is, and how this is far harder than fighting literal dragons.

  • I would have expected a jump from Mint to Arch, but Artix? I totally didn't expect that.

  • Given how straight men think it's hot, yeah, I don't think they mind, so long as they get to watch.

  • Oh, I have to manually choose "English" (even if the contents totally aren't). Otherwise, it'd get stuck in some sort of a "submitting" phase where a circle just keeps on spinning and yet nothing happens.

  • I have a lemmy.world account as well and I was pretty much concerned about mislabelling the language my replies before. But upon discovering that I can't choose any language (I listed several in my settings, including "undetermined") other than English, I just gave up thinking about it.

  • Yeah, that's a compliment. You already had me at that "Artix linux btw" part. 😂

  • I work in IT at the moment, but I don't consider myself as having a technical background. I did have a lot of programming subjects in high school and college, but I did end up in a non-IT, but (sort of) IT-adjacent course in university (but ended up not finishing it because of mental health issues).

Maybe I should own up to my technical background? I am also the go-to guy for IT (mostly networking) problems among my family and neighbors. But then again, I use PHP for most of my work.

  • That last part is my experience when I tried installing a "non-supported printer" for my computer. I wanted to hook up into a computer my brother bought, and ended up in the printer model's manufacturer's page and having to choose between an Ubuntu driver and a Debian one. I use neither.

I eventually found my way to the AUR repository (because btw, I used Manjaro at the time—go figure what's wrong in this scenario, lol!) and even ended up on some random repos for similar models. There were a lot of conflicting advice: like using a driver for a similar printer, or making my own package for my printer model.

I ended up deciding that I somehow have to make a package for my printer model, and having asked around for advice on how to do this, I was met with "why even brother with that printer brand?!" And I was like, "because that's what's available to me! And I don't have enough money to buy a different one! I just want this to work!!"

  • But if you put me in front of a Mac, I wouldn’t even know how to copy/paste text.

I've had to troubleshoot router problems for a neighbor who uses Mac, and man was it a confusing experience. The UX is obviously Mac, so I've had trouble with it. But when I got to the command-line, it almost broke me. Why I was even in the command-line in the first place? I don't even know! But it's a confusing mix of familiar (from daily-driving Linux), and unfamiliar (different Mac-specific commands and syntax).

Someone else could probably point out what I've done wrong, but it still doesn't make it not a confusing experience. It's humbling, and the kids who've hung around me watching me try to fix their computer were even giving me tips (mostly on how to navigate the UI, helping me where to find the settings, etc).

  • Well, to be “fair,” a significant portion of homophobes believe an invisible man in the sky said it was bad…

If it weren't for that, I would imagine it'd be advantageous for straight guys for there to be a gay guys: there'd be less competition for the women!

  • I do not know if their instance can allow users to use a different language than English in the "select language" dropdown menu.

I have to use English here, but I haven't checked languages other than French and my native language. I think this is a setting that instance owners can adjust, but I am not sure.

  • Should be expected if people know what libraries and librarians stand for.

  • If ever there is a "stereotypical OG Lemmy user" bingo card you'd probably be pretty close to winning.

  • I was typing an earlier version of my reply to you when it got lost in the aether. Sorry, but I forgot about this bit which I shall be putting in a separate reply.

people just have less experience with it. The smaller user base means there’s a lot less help available online as well.

I agree with this, wholeheartedly. However, I think those who use Linux are a self-selecting sort. This means, unfortunately, that the type of person who might be able to best help a "typical Linux newb coming from Windows" isn't using Linux in the first place, or have already gone long past the point of being able to be in a mindset best suited to help.
