  • I, too, am in a mixed attractiveness relationship. Though I'm on the opposite side as you. All I can say is if my wife was receiving those comments, she did not show it. After all these years I think her family and friends accept me.

But in all seriousness, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you are happy, then that's all that matters.

  • The bird should pass out long before the people. Just like if a person drowns today, if they can be resuscitated quick enough, they'll continue to live. So bird passes out. They evacuate and revive the bird. They clear the mine or exchange air or whatever to remedy the situation. Rinse and repeat.

  • Did you read the same comment as me? I read that as "why would the powers that be wilfully give up the path to that power?"

They're not saying "obey". They're saying this shouldn't be a surprise.

  • From my example, the part where they claim to have not made the argument is what I'd consider gaslighting. My understanding of gaslighting is any attempt to make someone question reality. So the reality is they definitely said one thing. When that goes wrong, they claim to have never said it. It's a tool of someone who manipulates.

  • Except literally not the echo chamber. The intent is to get the message to those not yet brainwashed so they don't end up in an echo chamber. You can still directly and genuinely rebut their dumbassery. That's not "bad faith". The fact that I know the idiot won't be swayed by the truth, doesn't change the fact it's the truth. Addressing idiotic points explicitly is not bad faith.

  • Then they say they trust parents to make decisions on vaccines when what they mean is they are anti-vax.

Online debate can help in niche situations. It's not about convincing the person toy you are directly opposing. It's about getting the counter arguments in a bigger forum so less brainwashed people might be able to avoid getting brainwashed.

  • Gaslighting could take the form of saying "my political team would never do [the thing]." Their political team subsequently does [the thing]. Then claiming they never said the original statement. Sometimes they're even so fucking stupid as to leave that comment visible so you can just screenshot it and ask "this you?"

... ask me how I know.

  • Thanks for the extra info. So not chalking it up to "failure" in such a short time should maybe be chalked up to failure in such a "short time".

Reminds me of times during the height of covid when the antivax nutter I know on Facebook would rant about some article showing "the vax not working" or whatever bullshit. His propaganda outlets of choice would seemingly sift through monthly data by country and if one country failed to report one period or reported two periods in one they'd cry foul and point to just those numbers.

  • when the general populace voted for an continue to support this

Did they though? Only 63.4% of voting eligible citizens voted in '24. And of those only 49.8% voted for trump. He has never won a majority of the popular vote. Ever. It's due to the electoral college and the cap on representatives in the house. This gives a significant advantage to lower population states that typically lean republican. Those rules seemed to make sense before we could reasonably collect, count results, and communicate that info in a day. Those rules no longer make sense but as it benefits the republicans they will hold that hill until they die. This country would be shaped very differently if we used the popular vote.

  • I'd be interested in more long term effects. Are these increased police killings actually getting to people that might have murdered in the future? If that was the goal I'd have predicted an increase in police killings like this is showing. Then both numbers would start to drop at a rate faster than they had been.

Not that I'm condoning the practice, I just wouldn't chalk it up to a "failure" after such a short time.
