  • It looked similar to the paradise fire which took a while before we ever had an accurate count since some people were burned quite heavily or even just basically what large bones are left when they aren’t completely burned and turned to ash by a fire.

  • I mean, compared to when I was a kid in Sacramento our summer skies have been incredibly blue. We use to have really heavy smog here and especially in the last 10 years I’ve really noticed an increase in quality. That said the fires kind of stop some of that progress every now and then.

  • As a former larger school district sysadmin all I’m going to say is Fuccckkkkk Surface products. The repair ability of surface devices (sans Surface Laptops) is so bad it’s basically a throwaway device. We wouldn’t dare switch from ChromeOS to that, not because of the whole Microsoft problem or learning a new ecosystem but just simply because we cannot possibly in-house repair those devices and Microsoft support on surface devices is Asssssssss. I had one bad surface in my life and I spent half a work day with MS Support just to get them to send me a box to ship it in so they could repair it.

  • While I agree with the dataset point I will say that I don’t believe this to be rage bait. It’s just pointing out and saying exactly what something did. That said AI isn’t meant for taking a picture and asking it to do something more with it for now. As well though to AI when it has tags like “professional headshot” in America and as an English input it will most likely pull from data that’s built around Hollywood types which will be a completely lopsided amount of blondes with blue eyes. It’s really important to me though that people read stuff like this article, and understand how we end up with some “news” outlets saying things like “someone said computers are racist” without understanding the context such as this. Outputs are only as good as the inputs.

  • While I am with you on the frustration, I think it’s important to understand why we got to this point. A ton of those anti-trust rules and laws were written a century ago and were around steel, oil and rail. Industries that provided physical good and services to the country. Tech has been able to skirt all of this as the rules were never written for them. Hopefully we see updates to our anti-trust rules and update accordingly. I’d love to take down Amazon, but I also want to prevent others from getting that big ever again.

  • I mean, I guess you could be ok with it if you’re a pedo. Shit like this caused massive controversy for Reddit in the beginning, and it only leads to others with worse outlooks feeling safe here. I don’t know if you were around on Reddit during the r/thedonald period but that sub bred nothing but hate that quickly found a home to radicalize on the platform. Same went with Jailbait. It spawned spacedicks and other horrendous subs.

Also, as an instance dedicated to LGBT+ what if another instance was dedicated to hatred towards LGBT+? Should Blahaj continue to federate with them? What if I open a community dedicated to “communicating about how to kill a certain group?” It’s not illegal. Freedom of speech is important after all, but maybe at some point people stop just talking about something and start acting.

While the slippery slope argument can be applied to anything at the end of the day it’s really down to something super simple. This is one instance choosing to defederate from another. That’s their choice.

  • It’s shown up multiple times on the trending and hit page, so I imagine they’re aware of it. The excuse of it being one community amongst many though is something that Blahaj has the ability to not support. There’s a lot of instances too where we could say it’s “one bad things amongst many good things” but that doesn’t make it ok…

  • Sorry, I should have been more specific in my comment. Lemmynsfw has tons of communities dedicated to women with small boobs and small/petite women. This is great, they have gorgeous bodies and they should be appreciated too! However, Lemmynsfw has a community called “fauxbait” which is… obviously not ok. I was on Reddit well before 2010, but anyone on there from that era remembers the controversy that the “jailbait” subreddit caused. In fact, to say it was a controversy is understating it… anyways, fauxbait on lemmtnsfw specifically in its sidebar says “a community dedicated to women who look underage but aren’t.” Which to me is a MASSIVE red flag. This consists of lots of porn stars and models that are petite, small, “cute” and generally flat. Again, these women should have places to post their bodies and to feel beautiful and wanted for them, however places that sexualize them for appearing underage while skirting that “legality” are not things that should be allowed. Specifically because it brings unwanted negative attention to Lemmy, provides governments and companies reasons to disallow access to Lemmy, and over all provides less desirable people with a place they feel is accepting of their views.

So, the implication is “they're almost jailbait while legally not being such.” Which is definitely a thing. They can, I guess, have an instance where that’s allowed since it isn’t “technically” illegal but is highly immoral and questionably unethical. However, in this case all I’m saying is that I can see why Blahaj defederated from it.

  • I’m thinking that they may have either made a mistake in picking another community, or that they saw what they thought was content from that community and called it out immediately. Let’s not forget that if anything Lemmy is less immune to the moderator god complex than Reddit. Since most “mods” of Lemmy/fediverse instances are also paying a physical price they feel even more attacked. Rather than just announcing simply “Blahaj has defederated from Lemmynsfw” they made a whole post about it and then talked at length about culture war stuff. A simple “Blahaj states their reason for defederating is due to our hosting of potentially illegal content. We want to remind our subscribers and user that lemmynsfw does NOT support illegal content, will NOT host it and will remove anything that violates the law.” They chose to take it as an insult. It’s just business.

  • That was part of what I felt they’re doing, but to me the community on lemmynsfw also bothered me and I blocked it. There’s definitely something wrong and nefarious about a community who resides in legal territory but relies on an implication. It’s the same as a community of Nazis existing but using dog whistle wording to avoid anyone noticing. I’m not going to say it’s illegal, but I’m also not in support of it and I understand Blahaj doing what they did.

  • The real alternative is super simple. It requires just a little bit of knowledge. All we would need is to have someone who is an enterprise grade sysadmin with nothing but free time and a willingness to do something they will barely get paid for, if not lose money on. Then we also need to hire out a dedicated network and security engineer as well as a dedicated network traffic monitor. Then we would need to implement and setup our own hosting, as well as servers and configure our own databases. Of course all of this has to be done as cheaply as possible by people who are so good at multiple different sectors of IT and could easily be making more money doing work, but obviously out of the kindness of their hearts want to progress the fediverse and Lemmy rather than realizing they could be making 200k+ doing the same thing for a private company rather than a hobby.

In short: we need a network engineer, a security analyst, a sysadmin (or maybe 2?) all of whom work 24/7 for free and then purchase all of the physical hardware with the knowledge and capacity to set it up and maintain it to nearly break even just so we can shitpost rather than those people working and making 200k+ a year.

  • Honestly the amount of times that sub assumed they had a “smoking gun” kept me coming back because it was like reality TV. I’m assuming that the sub that thought the government was covering up aliens back in the 50s doesn’t realize that they’re probably using aliens being “here” as a way to cover up new action.

  • Holy shit, I remember this video when it was posted on Reddit! It was in the UFO sub and everyone in there was actually buying it (at least when I saw it which was when it was gaining traction). I saw it from all and I remember thinking how ridiculous it looked and didn’t show much of anything.
