  • The US was absolutely the world leader after WW2. The entire system for global trade and finance has been designed by and around the US, and everybody played ball.

Obviously "leader of the free world" should come with some annotations about what they mean with "freedom", and the US has absolutely been complicit in overthrowing some democracies and supporting dictatorships, but it's indisputable that they've had a position of leadership among free and democratic countries; the US did often set the standard, and got what they wanted.

And for a long time, the things they wanted weren't always just for the good of the US, but good for many countries and possibly the world, at least from some perspective. The US has pressured many other colonial powers to release their colonies, for example.

Of course they were also often wrong, and often disastrously so, but that rarely hurt their position of leadership. Until now. Actually until Bush started the Iraq war; that was the first real dent in US credibility. Obama did a lot to repair it, and then Trump flushed it down the toilet.

  • From what I know, those agents can be absolutely fantastic as long as they run under strict guidance of a senior developer who really knows how to use them. Fully autonomous agents sound like a terrible idea.

  • I recently wanted to send a file from Linux to an old tablet over Bluetooth. Can't be done apparently. I can send it to my phone, a windows laptop can send it to the tablet, but my Linux PC apparently can't. Still baffled about it.

  • The American obsession with bathroom segregation is weird. In other countries, women will sometimes use the men's bathroom when there's a long line in front of the women's and not the men's. Fathers needing to change a diaper on their kid sometimes use the baby changing station in the women's bathroom if that's where it's located (though that's increasingly being fixed).

This is not something that requires excessive legislation if you can avoid obsessing over other people's genitals.

  • I was so excited after she picked Tim Walz. It was starting to look like the most progressive ticket in decades, she was ahead in the polls, and then she turned around and started campaigning with Republicans and CEOs. Total betrayal.

And yeah, she disappeared. I hear more from Biden and Obama than from her.

  • Same with Indiana Jones. Maybe he's slightly less terrible about it than Lara Croft, but the fact that he cares only about that golden idol and not about the entire temple complex around it with apparently still active traps, makes him a terrible archaeologist.

They're both very effective adventurers and tomb robbers, though. And at least Lara Croft doesn't pretend to be any better than that.

  • It's worth remembering that there was a time when the highest US tax bracket was taxed at 90%, and that didn't stop the US's longest period of sustained economic growth.

Ridiculously high tax rates for ridiculously high incomes have been done before and are entirely feasible.
