  • Ya I get how it feels like nothing ever gets done, or only the 'little things' but that seems to be how it works. I have some things I harp on about (first past the post voting in Canada) and everything else to me is something small. We all have our major issues we'd like to see handled (anti-trust/corruption is high on my list as well).

But you can still count this as a win and complain about what is left to do. It is a huge deal to some people, for those people it was probably their #1 major issue, potentially life changing. Not you or me, but doesn't mean we have to be angry about that.

And just an aside, but I'd kill for more protected bike lanes. I don't know if you are able to bike where you live, but it makes getting from a to b not a total pain in the ass.

  • I need some good news today and this was it. Solid work. And quick too.

  • See that other article on the NYPost next to this one? A guy turned himself into a border collie? He's a dog now and it only cost $20,000.

Great news source. No problems here. Not click bait garbage at all. Nope, not meant for maximum sharing. Thanks L4sBot for your contribution.

  • I feel like I'm turning into 'that guy' again but cryptocurrency could help this out.

    a) connect wallet to lifehacker

    b) have fractions of a cent taken out to unlock articles

I know people can bypass it/copy paste, but at the end of the day it would be another source of revenue. They are surviving as is, but barely.

  • The reddit sub always seemed to be a lot more about the business side of technology and I just remember a lot of arguing.

It would be nice to have an actual technology sub that discusses actual technology.

How about the mods unsticky the Twitter/Elon megathread?

  • I didn't see any proposals to ban them. If anything this post is about what little value they bring to the community.

But maybe it's because I'd rather this community be more about technology and less about technology as it appears in the news.

  • Also I think it's funny that we can bail out large companies on repeat, but bailing out people is a show stopper. It's backwards. The economy is supposed to serve us, not the other way around.

  • Good question. I'll admit that I like UBI, but I haven't done any serious reading into it. I have a break from work this month so maybe I'll try and find a book so I can answer this type of question better in the future. I don't think it's so much an issue for good jobs, but the real shit jobs might be an issue, but maybe not, and UBI in the beginning wouldn't just be for everyone it would be for selected groups.

A brief search gave this: https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2020/2/19/21112570/universal-basic-income-ubi-map

    Some gains:

    • lower crime
    • increased fertility (maybe a good thing idk?)
    • decrease or eliminate extreme poverty
    • improves education
  • Probably transparency. It's a public ledger. That's one of the benefits I'm aware of.

  • I thought so too so I'm still confused about the votes. Oh well

  • Idk I felt like above a certain point karma was just an indication that that person knew how to game the system and play nice with reddit.

I like how it is on lemmy. I feel like downvotes/upvotes prompt conversations. You're at 47/6 and it doesn't really matter to me, it just shows that people might not totally agree and then I'm hopeful that they have left a comment.

I think it's also possible that the voting system on reddit was effective at marginalizing people.

  • I think this is more about frustration experienced by artists in our society at being given so little compensation.

The answer is staring us in the face. UBI goes hand in hand with developments in AI. Give artists a basic salary from the government so they can afford to live well. This isn't a AI problem this is a broken society problem. I support artists advocating for themselves, but the fact that they aren't asking for UBI really speaks to how hopeless our society feels right now.

  • Isn't this correct? What's missing?

    Let's ask chatGPT3.5:

Mostly accurate. Large language models like me can generate text based on patterns learned from existing texts, but we don't "calculate probabilities" in the traditional sense. Instead, we use statistical methods to predict the likelihood of certain word sequences based on the training data.

  • Take note that this is an engaging title. I'd like to see more political science discussion in this community. These opinion pieces are part not a good part of the internet. They're made for sharing and being consumed on social media.

  • I do this too and I actually like this arrangement. I can take a break in the day and bike or walk into work. Hang out for an hour or two and leave. That's really the gain of going back to office; hanging out with your colleagues. I'm more productive at home.

  • I'm just going to pretend I didn't buy any AMD surface laptops.

  • I think we are lucky to not have to make those choices.

My uncle was murdered and my grandma ended up spending a lot of time talking with the murderer. That's one way. There is also no shortage of stories about people killing those who have traumatized family members (rape and murder). In my case the murderer was troubled, but in other cases (Mitch) they are psychopathic people who I think should be removed from society one way or another. That's my sentiment towards Mitch and his health problems. I am completely ambivalent about his well being. To be completely anti-violence is a position, but it is a hard one to hold in reality.

  • I think it is what you're saying but not what you are intending to say. It sounds like there are conditions under which violence is ok, though violence itself is something to be avoided. Eg. Ukraine can defend itself using violence because violence in defence is ok, which in my mind sounds a lot like the end (self preservation) justifies the means (war).
