  • I'm not a US voter, I am not saying people should not vot for Biden because of this. That said, the Israeli genocide is a wedge issue for Dems. I don't think them expending political capital to help Bibi is good for the world and tgeir chances to get elected.

  • Then they get a judge like Cannon.

The problem is that the system also is of two minds on whether he's above the law. Shit's broken, and not because they can't fix it. If this happened in e.g. Germany, Trump would already be behind bars (long before he'd have run for pres in the first place), and GSG9 would be looking for people terrorizing juries.

  • Well there is the convicted felon, rapist and wannabe dictatorial psychopath, there is the guy with the dead brainworms in his head, and there is the guy who you can vote for if you would like things to continue as they are.

Oh, you can also choose between reluctant and enthusiastic support of genocide, and breaking up strikes versus shooting at protestors. Clearly the US is the citadel of democracy.

  • Genocide is not a crime that goes by the numbers. It's not about the number of children and civilians you killed. Those are just "regular" war crimes. Those are being committed by both of those countries, and arguably Israel is bigger on mass murder right now.

Genocide is where you kill or displace people to erase their cultural or national identity. In that, they are committing the exact same crime. Genocide is not when you kill Ukrainians or Palestinians, but when you declare that they do not have a right to exist, and effect that with force. Bombing a Palestinian hospital or a Ukrainian one is "just" a crime against humanity, mass murder, war crime, goes against the Geneva Conventions.

If you make one Palestinian leave Palestine, or take away one child from a Ukrainian family and raise them as Russian, so that there are less Palestinians / Ukrainians in the world, that's genocide.

Both Russia and Israel are committing one single count of genocide each right now, with Israel committing a lot more murders, though Russia is trying their best too.

  • I don't think it's the Secret Service or the logistics of the thing that's the problem. They can just join the prison guards and work in their place in Trump's ward. They don't serve Trump, they serve the people. They can be Trump's prison guards as well as his protectors.

The bigger problem is that I don't imagine G7 leaders would be keen to attend a summit at Rikers, or that Trump wouldn't cause a constitutional crisis every single minute deliberately.

  • The problem is that in the meantime, he got elected to the presidency, served his term, irrevocably damaged the US' international relations, incited an unsurrection, committed a bazillion other crimes, and looks poised to get to the presidency again. All the while we got through a Democratic term where they could build a fraction back up of what Trump destroyed while also fighting with their own failed politics (Biden is complicit in why student loans are a big problem now, and well there is the genocide thing).

I can understand the wheels of justice are slow and steady, but the fires of chaos are hot on its heels. I hope I'm wrong, but the US seems like it will elect a convicted felon to its highest office to both guide and represent it in this fucked up world we have right now.

  • It depends on the sentencing, which is right before the RNC in a few days. I've heard the usual punishment for this kind of stuff is at most 4 years of prison, but for first time offenders it is usually suspended. So my guess is that it's a big blob of nothing, again.

Then again, imagine being assigned as parole officer to Trump.
