Banks practice defense in depth as other security practitioners do. Not every defense will stop every attack, so a layered, overlapping approach is used.

There is parallel with masking. The bank values the safety of the whole rather than the freedom to root for an individual. You stand to lose only your own bank balance. The bank stands to lose the funds of every rooted phone that contains a banking app exploit targeting them.

Old, insecure browsers are rejected too.

The word “potentially” was critical in the parent’s comment. A banking app cannot be assured that other apps are prevented from accessing its data when the phone is rooted.

Your risk exposure is that you could lose your bank account balance. The banks risk exposure is that they could lose every bank account balance exploited by the same rooted phone vulnerability. So they evaluate risk differently than you do.

Humans have been doing mass killings have been happening long before there was mass tracking.

Rooted mobile devices are a reasonable signal they been have hacked and security features might be disabled or work as expected.

It just banks, a lot of corporate security polices don’t allow rooted devices, as they could bypass mobile device management policies for devices owned by the company.

With laptops it’s a different story. Whether users have Mac, Linux or Windows, there’s a reasonable chance they have admin access too, so checking for root access is not such a useful signal there.

That laptop is 5 years ago old. Business policies normally require replacing laptops at age.

Asahi/Fedora Linux is apparently mostly working on Apple Silicon. I’m using it on a Mac Mini as a server without problems.

Garmin smartwatches are good, support both Apple and Android and have their own App Store store for the watches that works with both mobile OS platforms.

It’s not clear what critical features couldn’t work for Apple on Android.

I researched this question for a laptop to sell on eBay. I tried Pop OS and Mint and choose Mint.

It seems that Mint may be the most popular distro for older Linux laptops sold on eBay.

I have been reading NYT’s coverage of this conflict. Their journalists seem to have a range of viewpoints and their coverage reflects that.

The conflict has proved hard to cover because journalists have been targeted and killed, so there are a shortage of journalists on the ground in Gaza.

I’ve also appreciated the times when NYT has published follow-up pieces to explain when I found case where their own reporting didn’t meet their own high standards and what they are doing about it.

I agree we should hold them to a high standard, we should have a conversation about media literacy and be careful what we consume.

Regarding a possible NYT ban, I think it is both important to consider their totality of coverage behold what is seen as specific mistakes. Also consider the alternatives. What English language outlets have objectively better and less biased coverage of the conflict?

A lot of presentations are made today with Keynote, Google Slides or LibreOffice Impress.
