I read these threads for the butthurt responses from the muskovites. They never disappoint.

They think that they are. Part of marxist theory, at least traditional 'orthodox' marxist theory is that the development of a capitalist mode of production is essential to development of revolutionary consciousness in the proletariat. The CCP keeps its oligarchs on a leash. They have been allowed to prosper only as part of the rapid modernization of the Chinese economy over the last 30-40 years.

It doesn't help that our streets, stroads, and roads are frequently unwalkable.
I was waiting for my car to get its brakes fixed yesterday, and decided to go across the street to a starbucks. It took like 15 minutes to cross the street as I had to wait for two sets of lights to cross the intersection. At least there was an actual sidewalk. Later I walked over to a different strip mall to get some lunch. No sidewalk at all. Multilane road with lots of traffic, no sidewalks. The few pedestrians out were, like I was, using parking lots as pathways to avoid getting run over.

The corporations 'doing the right thing' by subsidizing FOSS are under the same enshittification pressures as the rest of the global economic system, and as a consequence they will sooner or later not be doing the right thing at all.

I find the fact that both of my parents are dead to be a huge barrier to a healthy relationship. At this point we really have stopped communicating. /s (not really though, it is just a fact.)

That might be the real problem in Japan, but it certainly is not the real problem in the US. In the US the real problem is there is no mandated parental leave.

Gitlab at least used to be the open source release of GitHub. I ran it in my lab for a while but stopped as I was using github anyway. It was easy to setup and maintain but it used a lot of resources. I ran it on a vm, there is likely a docker build as well.

This. Why the fuck is there a fee to begin with? These people are refugees, typically with very limited assets. It is utter idiocy, and worse it is intentional.

So I'm not a big fan of edge, but the addition of their chatgpt search assist to edge has made me start using it instead of google's horrible shit infested search. At least for tech stuff there is no comparison.

We had a world class transcontinental rail system that was stunningly expansive. Much of it, especially the branch lines that went just about everywhere people built towns and cities, has been abandoned, sold, or converted to bike paths. Now we have basically a freight only system with near zero branch service, and some local and inter-city rail transit that is utterly shitty by developed world standards.
