Huge time saver. I've had GPT doing a lot of work for me and it makes stuff like managing my Arch install smooth and easy. I don't use OpenAI stuff much though. Gemini has gotten way better, Claude 3.5 Sonnet is beastly at code stuff. I guess if you're writing extremely complex production stuff it's not going to be able to do that, but try asking most people even what an unsigned integer is. Most people will be like "what?"
COVID tried and a lot of people paid the price for being low information and not so bright. Sadly plenty of people who did the right things still got fucked by stupidity of others!
Just look at AlphaProof. Lol we're all about to be outclassed. I'm sure everyone will still derrid the bots. They could be actual ASI and especially here in the US we'd say "I don't see any intelligence." I wish or society and all of us at individualsc would reflect on our limitations and tiny tiny insignificance on the grand scale. Our egos may kill us.
P.S.. I give us a 10% to make it to 2100 in any numbers or quality of life we'd consider remotely acceptable today. Pretty grim, but I think that's the weight of the challenges we're facing. Without AI I'd probably just say it was fucking hopeless. Because we've had all the time we needed and all the tech we needed and hardly ever fix anything. Always running a day late and a dollar short. This species has dreams to big for our collective britches. It's always been a foolish endeavor and full of suffering and horrors. We're here though so I hope we at least give it a good go. Would be super lame to go out in a putter and take must lifev on earth with us.
So now the question is if we can use all these access models to actually do something about our problems. Even LLMs seem quite good at pointing out how we are really bad at using the tools we already have and know exactly how to use because we're always too busy arguing while the ship sinks!
I feel like everyone who isn't really heavily interacting or developing don't realize how much better they are than human assistants. Shit, for one it doesn't cost me $20 an hour and have to take a shit or get sick, or talk back and not do its fucking job. I do fucking think we need to say a lot of shit though so we'll know it ain't an LLM, because I don't know of an LLM that I can make output like this. I just wish most people were a little less stuck in their western oppulance. Would really help us no get blindsided.
AlphaProof isn't an LLM but it just was a point from gold against some of the smartest people on earth. You think you're smarter than the people building this stuff? That might be the dumbest shit about this. I swear the United States essentially really has become Ideocracy. From all angles. Capitalism sucks but AI isn't the problem. Bunch of greedy apes is the fucking problem like it always has been. Lol
So you know if you have clean water and food though, you could be considered a very greedy ape. Why are you not fighting harder for clean water etc? What do you do to make the world better? (Shit probably same as me. Jack shit)
Yeah I want my autonomous electric town car to be fully open. We should be able to have sustainable cars if any cars at all. Cars you can't easily repair or maintain are not sustainable.
Or there are bigger fish to fry like coal power plants and wasted idle etc. shit Google's AI search results are wasteful in some cases but I've found it to actually improve my experience but I use a mix of search engines. You can always use one without AI or turn it off. It's being pushed into almost every search though which I really don't think is useful, and it would be best if they cached the answers instead of regeneration on command. They may cache some though.
Yeah everyone like "AI content flood oh noooo, AI AI AI" yet very few mention this much much bigger issue of centralized algorithmically controlled walled gardens where everyone is. That's kinda like WeChat in China. It is hard to have real democracy or freedom of information (or privacy of any sort) when only a few big corporations have the social networks all locked down. The bad thing is because of the social network effect it's extremely hard to get people to switch even if the alternatives are even better! So much momentum. We need to find out a way to be able to help distribute users because the software isn't the problem anymore and neither is infrastructure or any of the other stuff that is given the big guys advantage really. The biggest problem aside from the social network effect is monetization I suppose. Still, it's hard to even start any kind of method of monetization for alternative platforms or decentralized platforms when you can't get anybody to switch in the first place or can't get critical mass.
The only way to beat time is via simulation. We do it all the time. Otherwise you couldn't drive a car! You maybe "imagine" / "model" the environment / drivers, the physics, etc.
Without intelligence we are doomed because inaction. We had the technology but apathy and dental won, and now it's a race against entropy/time.
And the new material science discoceries etc should really help. Given that DeepMind used GNoME to find 2.2 million new crystals, including 380,000 stable materials. That's kinda a big deal. That was November of last year. Haha people have no idea how much this could help us. We fucked up but the light is shining and we need to run fast. I'm pretty sure, short this miraculous pace of discovery and compound returns, we will/would end up in a runaway climate feedback loop. IPCC has been throwing out their best models because they don't like the implications that it is going faster than expected and the climate sensitivity may be worse than expected.
People think AI is gonna cook us? The sun would like to make a bet.
We need to stop this or it really is a given. I've been in this mindset a lot, but we gotta stop. Finally there's a tiny light at the end of the tunnel. Los of progress etc. people's egos and distrust and cynicism about others will truly be our doom should that befall us this century (haha hopefully not this decade)
I don't get the doom but idk I have been watching this stuff closely for over a decade. I think it's exciting and people are having All these strange expectations out of these systems all the sudden just because they're smart. Well they were smart before any of this generative AI stuff. Also scientific breakthroughs in medicine, blind people have something that can assist them. As someone with some disabilities, and knowing a lot of people who also have disabilities, it seems to be the privilege of the healthy and comfortable to keep the status quo.
Also if we want to play that game we were so fucked by climate change already that I had no hope. Now I have a little. It's not going away so let's push for open open open free software. (And model weights)
