  • Cue the outrage. Meanwhile no-one questions why people feel compelled to sell their own organs in order to survive. This is just a logical and expected outcome of a system where some give their own blood so that others can live better.

  • The problem is that this solves nothing. Since COVID the US has been writing checks it cannot cash and the party will come to an end sooner or later. The longer we kick the can down the road the more painful it will be. Republicans won't increase taxes (even Biden didn't roll back Trump's tax cuts). And Democrats won't cut entitlement spending. So we are essentially screwed.

  • You can't control how or even if you will arrive at old age but you can swing the odds dramatically in your favor by the choices you make when you are younger. Eat healthily, avoid hard drugs and tobacco, drink alcohol only in moderation and get plenty of excercise that consists of four categories: resistance (aerobic), VO2 max (anaerobic), strength and stability.

  • Many other countries have liberal immigration policies and haven't experienced these problems. Something seems to have gone uniquely wrong in Sweden. Gang membership in Sweden is comprised overwhelmingly of people from a handful of countries: Syria, Serbia, Bosnia, Albania and Iraq. Most immigrants to Sweden come from India for example, and don't seem to cause problems. Nor do those from Poland or the UK.

It looks like a massive failure to vet individuals from a few nations .. possibly out of a misplaced sensitivity to appearing racist.

  • Some mistakes can screw up the rest of day. Some mistakes can screw up the rest of your life. Try to avoid making the former, but avoid making the latter at all costs. Hard drugs, an extramarital affair, drinking and driving.Think the consequences through before you do these things.

  • For what purpose? Selling EVs is not like selling property.

BYD is now the second largest EV vendor in the world and there market share is growing rapidly. They've stayed out of the US market for some reason (probably worried about getting hit with sanctions like Huawei) but there are plenty of them in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

  • Renewables suffer from intermittency .. production depends on whether the wind is blowing or the sun is shining .. and they can't be ramped up quickly to cope with increased demand. So you need a baseline source to take care of that and the only options we have are fossil fuel or nuclear.

  • Not only Mandela. All the top cadre of the ANC and SA Communist party in those days were great. Govan Mbeki (Thabos' father). Walter Sisulu. Chris Hani (murdered by the apartheid regime). Steve Biko (hopefully everyone knows who Steve Biko was). Joe Slovo (his wife, Ruth First, was also murdered by the regime). These were all good, honest and decent people, not to mention brave and courageous. It's a tragedy and a disgrace to see how the next generation of leaders has trashed the legacy of these amazing people.

  • The problem in South Africa has nothing to do with state owned companies vs private ones. It has everything to do with corruption. Not just the mild, occasional bribe here and there but rampant endemic corruption at almost every level. Corruption is like a cancer and in South Africa it's been allowed to fester and grow unhindered for decades, so removing it will be a monumental endeavor .. there are too many vested interests at stake now. I'm not optimistic any solution will be forthcoming anytime soon. Privatisation without fixing the underlying rot won't change anything.

  • It will come, hang in there and give it time. When my wife of 11 years left with our two children I thought it was the end of the world. Turned out there was another life waiting that was even better (apart from not getting to seeing my kids every day). Being with someone you love who actually loves you back, who lifts you up instead of bringing you down.. that feeling is amazing.

  • I remember a case where a mother killed her two young kids because she wanted them to go to heaven. Her reasoning was that if they grew up and became sinners they would end up in hell. By murdering them before they knew what sin was she actually saved them. Thing is, if you believe in that shit then what she did really makes perfect sense.
