If police were the honest, fair, law-abiding heroes they’re presented as, this would be a much simpler question.
Ideally, I’d choose to replace the police (not merely slap an “under new management” banner on the police station) with a MUCH more transparent and just organization that genuinely serves and protects the public.
I also don’t think there’s enough of an emphasis on safety regarding public ownership of guns. All laws need to be tightened, standardized between states, and loopholes need to be firmly closed. I know we Americans have been taught that gun ownership is an important constitutional right, but I think that in 250 years, guns have proven to do much more harm than good. Decisions on gun laws need to make public safety their primary consideration.
People aren’t snapping up houses in notoriously red states that also happen to be in the hottest parts of the country, one with major infrastructure problems, and another that’s regularly hit by hurricanes? Gee, what a mystery. Don’t people at least know that they can rely on FEMA? Oh wait…
In my lifetime, I’ve met ONE very religious Christian who wasn’t a hypocrite. ONE. He was a very nice guy, though, and I hope he and his family are doing well.
The remaining 99.9% of the time, I’m absolutely with you.
You know what will make you feel better? Learn about early American history, specifically the Revolutionary War and the period shortly before it. Ordinary citizens conquered one of the most powerful militaries in the world. Ordinary citizens. People like you and me. There was no “perfect savior” to lead them, either - George Washington was in over his head at first, but was smart enough to learn from his mistakes.
What’s going on now is nothing to celebrate, but the ani-establishment heroes of the past certainly are.
In American English, saying “I get it” isn’t the same thing as “I approve of it”. It’s entirely possible to understand a point of view without supporting that point of view. The commenter you’re responding to may not deserve to be called a cunt.
That’s great, but when you have a majority of Supreme Court justices who routinely ignore the Constitution, “safeguards” won’t matter for shit. Laws don’t matter much when corrupt people have the final say.
I would imagine that they’d forget most of what they learned the second they realized they were drowning. Panic would shut their brain down.
Maybe, if they recover somewhat and manage to doggie-paddle or something, they’ll remember a useful sentence or two.
