  • The map should include major sources of valuable fresh water, for even more chaotic fun. For example, I’d draw two long, thin countries on each bank of the Nile.

  • Oh no! Consequences! That might even mean a strongly worded letter in… bold type!

This Judge Boasberg character is going to “fall out a window” if he keeps it up.

  • It would be interesting to see Trump defend Apple. Although they’re subservient to him, they’re probably not quite as subservient as he’d like.

  • Technically, it’s a republic. In a full democracy, the citizens would vote on everything directly. You know all those bills that Congress votes on? We’d handle them ourselves.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think a country has ever operated that way. It’s a logistical nightmare.

Edit: if something here is factually incorrect, an actual explanation would be helpful. Thanks.

  • Yes, but for her, it’s still better than the alternative.

  • Swatting

(To anyone who doesn’t realize I’m being a smartass, DO NOT DO THIS.)

  • And how many are dying because of Elumps cuts and policies? It’s a choice between bad and worse.

  • True.

Plus, I had forgotten how much I missed actual conversation!

  • The hive mind might already be here, depending on who you ask. I was already left/progressive, though, so it just feels like hanging out with like-minded people.

Jerks I can do without, but they’re unavoidable. Simply not engaging with them seems to work best.

  • I wouldn’t say I’m on the side of the disease, but I do hope it becomes a much bigger problem. Anything to take the focus and money from whatever else Trump wants to do, which would surely be worse.

  • Well, most of humanity has been sexist since time out of mind. Even if AIs are trained on nothing but objective data, they can’t help but mirror our sexist society. They must be carefully programmed to show society as it could be, instead of how it is. At the same time, they have to keep facts right - like the number of fingers on a hand, for example.

Even then, I’m sure we’ll encounter problems. AIs do not “think” in ways we understand.

  • Nothing defines him and his associates/fanboys better than that statement. To me, showing empathy and acting on it is the most beneficial thing one can do for humanity.

  • I think this is one of the reasons conservatives hate college. Impressionable students might develop empathy, and we certainly can’t have that.

  • They ought to rethink that. There was enough wrong that it sounds like an immediate danger to the crew. Hell, in the US, just "inadequate” alarms and fire doors “not as required” would be enough to close a building until they were fixed.

What do these people consider an “immediate danger”, anyway? A ship that’s actually sinking or burning at the time of inspection?

  • Port inspection documents show the Solong failed steering-related safety checks in Dublin, Ireland, in July, with the vessel's "emergency steering position communications/compass reading" unreadable. Inspectors found a total of 10 deficiencies, including "inadequate" alarms, survival craft "not properly maintained" and fire doors "not as required."

An inspection in Scotland in October found two other deficiencies. The ship wasn't detained after either inspection.

Maritime law is a mystery to me. Who the fuck okayed this?

“Bon voyage, losers! The ship is a floating death trap, but whatever.”

  • That was the first thing I thought, too, but thankfully he was charged by British police!
