  • Original PlayStation for not shipping with dual analog sticks from the start. Almost all games had to be playable with non-analog controllers. As a result, dual shock support was mostly an afterthought. Especially FPS games were awful to play.

Imagine the games that could’ve been possible if all games were designed with two analog sticks in mind. We would certainly have fewer games with tank controls.

I think this is also the main reason why it didn’t take until PlayStation 2 for developers to realize that the second analog stick is awesome for camera movement (instead of awkwardly mapping camera motion to the shoulder buttons).

  • It wasn't just this though; the tool itself lacks the intent, context, and limitations of what we're doing. It doesn't have other aspects of the project, influences, references, or personal experiences in the back of its mind, because it doesn't have a mind.

This describes the fundamental problem with AI. The chatbot will forever be like that new recruit to the team. Sure, they have the skills to make some contributions, but they lack the surrounding context to fully work autonomously. They need some guidance to get to the right path.

The difference between the chatbot and the new recruit is that the chatbot won’t remember all the guidances it got. The chatbot won’t remember all the design decisions that were made. The chatbot won’t remember that time prod went down. The chatbot will forever be like the new recruit with no experience.

  • A loss in sales of Chinese goods in America will hurt China.

”Trade war resistant” is probably closer to reality. It’s a major disruption that’s going to hurt their economy, but they can probably adjust. China can always sell their goods to some other country.

In grand scheme, I suppose America is more dependent on China than China is on America. It’s going to be difficult for America to replace Chinese goods.

  • The official excuse is to incentivize Americans to buy American made products. If you want to sell goods in America, then it should also be produced in America. Red state voters think this sounds like a good idea, because it will bring back more low skill jobs to America (red state voters generally don’t like education).

The problem is that this is very reckless, and probably won’t change anything (except making things cost way more). It completely turns the global market upside down. Other countries will answer by trading less with America.

I believe what will happen over time (if this continues) is that US is going to get economically weaker. They will rely more on export of their own goods, and to compete in the global market they must reduce their salaries. The average American will get poorer. The low skill jobs are back, but the salaries are shit.

The rich will somehow get richer as always.

  • Funny how Fortnite is among the incompatible games, and is the only game with a fix: ”A Switch 2 version is planned”

Great that they’re open about which games are incompatible, and that they seem to have made an effort to try all games on Switch.

  • AI is probably going to transform how code is written, but I don’t think AI will fully replace programmers. At least not in the foreseeable future.

Most of a programmer’s work is maintaining existing code. This is something current AI models still struggle with.
