  • Losing weight.

It really is as simple as making sure that Calories In < Calories Out. Reduce caloric intake through dietary changes and increase exercise. But in practice it can be difficult to maintain both of these consistently.

  • Always a good day when a new Primitive Technology video drops! This video continues the series of alternate kiln designs, with the latest design not requiring active blowing (I suspect after firing hundreds of clay pieces someone might be getting tired of spinning a fan for hours on end).

As always, turn on captions for the complete experience.

  • It’s important to read the full quote from Rivian’s CEO before complaining about $75k electric trucks:

“I think the reality of buying a combustion-powered vehicle … is sort of like building a horse barn in 1910,” he said. “Imagine buying a Chevy Suburban in 2030 … what are you going to do with that … in 10 years?”

He’s comparing buying a Rivian truck with buying a Suburban, which has a base price of $57k for the lowest tier configuration (LS) and a $76k price on the High Country configuration.

  • The report of the shooting and subsequent lockdown paralyzed campus and parts of the surrounding town of Chapel Hill a week after classes began at the state’s flagship public university. The university has approximately 20,000 undergraduate students and 12,000 graduate students.

A student told TV station WTVD that she had barricaded her dormitory door with her furniture. Another student, speaking softly, described hiding in fear with others in a dark bathroom.

Noel T. Brewer, a professor of health behavior, said he was once held at gunpoint in his mother’s jewelry store, but that Monday’s apparent shooting and lockdown was “far more stressful.”

Speaking from his locked office where he hid with other colleagues, Brewer, 57, said by phone that he was getting little information.

Brewer, a married father of two young kids, said he felt for anyone who might have been shot.

“But even in our own building, the students who are locked down and what they’re thinking about — it’s just a lot. It’s a terrible situation,” said Brewer.

It was also the first day of kindergarten for Brewer’s 5-year-old son. His elementary school was also on lockdown.

“He doesn’t know what’s going on. And at some point, he’s going to realize that he hasn’t gotten on the bus when he’s supposed to,” he said.

Brewer, who also has a 2-year-old added: “My husband and I have been trading texts and trying to figure out what to do … Just wondering how our kids are feeling. It’s a lot.”

One of Brewer's colleagues is visiting from Africa and staying in the U.S. for the first time.

“She said her one concern was guns and possibly something happening at the university,” Brewer said. “And this was her first faculty meeting, and her worst nightmare came true.”

As he and his colleagues waited in locked offices, they texted each other about whether it was safe to walk to the bathroom.

“We’re trying to tell each other stories and talk about cooking and trying to not get worked up,” he said. “But at the same time, we’re fielding lots of texts and calls from friends and family and colleagues.”

    ABC news and the AP

  • ABC11 learned all Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools are in secure mode -- meaning all building doors are closed and locked. The school district said elementary schools will not dismiss students until there is an all clear given at UNC.

"As a safety precaution, schools have been directed not to release students to their families at this time," the district said.

Chapel Hill Transit reports all buses in the area have halted their routes for the time being. UNC's Board of Trustees' special meeting and the Faculty Executive Committee's meeting are both canceled for Monday afternoon.

  • Oh sure, but that doesn’t change the fact that they supplied the gun to the shooter, a key step in the rampage.

The article gives a step by step breakdown of how the shooting went down, gives the names of the targeted location (Dollar Tree store), nearby university that went into lockdown (Edward Waters University), the streets where a makeshift memorial is being set up, names of the victims and people who interacted with him, etc. Presumably, none of these people and places ever wanted to be associated with the tragedy of a mass shooting, but unfortunately they had no choice in the matter.

The gun shop that sold the shooter the gun is no different. They’re intimately involved in the shooting; they have no choice in the matter, just like all the other victims. Even if they’ve followed every law they’re still linked to this tragedy. Following the law didn’t spare any of the victims from being linked to a mass killing, why should that protect the gun shop?

  • Inertia, I guess?

I have another account on lemm.ee which is federated with both, but I’ve been using this as my main since I joined lemmy. I might have to check out how things are on the other side of the fence.

  • I actually cross-posted this post into Beehaw's chat community, but thanks for the suggestion.

Ah, I guess I can’t see that from lemmy.world haha

Also, in an online forum at least, it is really hard to decipher intent so the actual content of the text matters a lot. so communicating criticisms without adding anything more than that just leads to the conversation not going anywhere.

That’s fair. I would hope that someone who has a genuine constructive criticism would be able to communicate it, but it might not hurt to have a rule reminding them to acknowledge and affirm the core concept before providing criticism. I can see how someone being a little curt and just voicing the criticism might come across as being anti- whatever the topic is.

PS: In a slightly unrelated question why did you decide to stay on lemmy.world since it seems like you might want to discuss with the Beehaw community as well?

When I joined lemmy I was looking for a general purpose instance - one where I could be a member in a variety of communities. At the time the largest communities actually tended to be on beehaw as they had been around much longer, but lemmy.world grew fast. By the time beehaw defederated with lemmy.world, it was clear that if I wanted to join a discussion on a recent news/politics/science article it would be best to choose a lemmy.world community as they were the most active.

No disrespect to the folks at beehaw, I may still make an alt account there. I appreciate what they’ve built, but it wasn’t the best fit for what I was looking to join. Ideally I’d be able to participate in their communities with this account, but I totally understand why they defederated with lemmy.world.

  • I agree with your general premise that safe spaces are necessary for allowing ideas to develop. I think they’re also necessary for giving people a place to simply exist without their existence being questioned or threatened.

However, I don’t know that I agree with your proposal to avoid echo chambers by encouraging “yes and”-style responses. The sort of person who accepts the core premise of these ideas and wants to improve them can probably already communicate their ideas/criticisms without violating the safe space.

A bad faith actor could always use “yes and” as a means to promote a slippery slope argument that seeks to invalidate the original idea. And there are certainly some ideas that would be dangerous to add on to.

A side note, if you’re interested in discussing how to create a supportive online space, you may want to check out beehaw.org if you haven’t already. They’re a lemmy instance that defederated with lemmy.world, but I believe they’re still federated with your instance. Before they defederated with us, I was able to read a series of lengthy posts by one of their admins describing their moderation philosophy- specifically how it evolved over the years as they tried to create a safe community in other sites and what they settled on for beehaw.org. It was really interesting, and their conclusion was that the only way to create a safe community was to proactively moderate, warning and banning users before they cross a line. Reactive moderation (removing/banning posts and users after they do something offensive) still allows for the negative post to impact the community before it’s removed. They also believe that having clearly defined rules doesn’t work since trolls just learn to work within them while still achieving their goals.

Their moderation style requires a lot of work to implement, but it definitely achieved the results they wanted. The beehaw communities were very friendly and users seemed more open with each other.

  • Yikes.

DeSantis is trying to run to the right of trump. Recall that trump began his 2016 campaign by saying

”When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. […] They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people”

I suppose advocating for war crimes is one way to campaign to the right of trump on border security.

Granted trump also campaigned by calling for war crimes back in 2016, so this isn’t entirely novel for a GOP presidential candidate:

The other thing with the terrorists is you have to take out their families, when you get these terrorists, you have to take out their families. They care about their lives, don’t kid yourself. When they say they don’t care about their lives, you have to take out their families.”

But on the other hand, DeSantis was a navy lawyer at Guantanamo tasked with making sure the soldiers followed the law. And we know how well that went.

As a young navy lawyer, the Republican was posted to the notorious prison camp. What he did there – and his role in the investigation of three deaths – remains controversial

In summary, when it comes to their policy on war crimes among the top republican candidates for president, Trump talks a big game but DeSantis has the actual experience to back up his “promises”.

The fact that I could quickly write up this analysis with sources is a damning indictment of these candidates, their supporters, and their enabling political party. What a fuckin’ shitshow.

  • Nuclear physicist here!

I agree with the general consensus in the comments. Alpha radiation from radium is easily stopped by a few centimeters of air, a sheet of paper, and even the dead layer of cells on the outside of your skin. So long as you don’t eat, inhale or inject the radium, you’ll be fine.

I wouldn’t keep it on your person for an extended period of time though - for example carrying it in your pocket every day, sleeping with it under your pillow, etc. Store it somewhere safe and not immediately next to your skin; the back of a drawer or on a shelf would be fine. Feel free to use it or show it to people from time to time. That’s a neat piece of history to have!

Near the top left, just under the community name is a label that says “Sidebar” with a little plus symbol to the right of it. Click this an it expands out, listing the community rules and a bunch of other info. At the very bottom of the expanded region is the list of mods. Just above that is a link labeled “Modlog”.

If you are using a mobile app or the mobile version of the site (m.lemmy.world) then you may not be able to do this.
