  • Edit to add disclaimer: this is shitpost level math here guys, I'm just spitballing.

It would definitely emit thermal radiation. if it was 99% efficient and the size of pluto's orbit, around a star like the sun, and the energy was used to create matter, I think it would radiate the remaining energy as 0.009 W/m2 with a peak emission wavelength of 150micrometers. The James Webb telescope has infrared capabilities that max out at 28.5 micrometers so def not detectable.

But probably a dyson sphere would be smaller than pluto's orbit, which would greatly increase the apparent power, and shorten the wavelength. idk it's all imaginary.

I won't subject you to my hand writing but I did (power of sun × 0.01)/(surface area of sphere with Pluto's orbital radius) to get radiation intensity (0.009 W/m2). Then rearranged Stefan-Boltzmann law to solve for temperature (19.8K). Then used Wien's Displacement Law to calculate the peak wavelength (1.5×10-4 m).

Maybe I'll run the numbers again with a martian orbit radius, and 50% efficiency.

  • I was pretty skeptical of them when I clicked "Technology Connections" video on them. It's the same thing as a convection oven, what's the big deal?

Well it's the same just like how a quadcopter drone is the same thing as a RC dual rotor helicopter

It's like yeah they're the same thing, but they have some important differences too.

  • I have inattentive type adhd as well, and was also diagnosed as an adult. I think It's normal to feel frustrated/disheartened as you grapple with it. I also recently mentioned to someone that I think I may have an emotional range that's narrower than typical.

My wife, doctor, occupational therapist (I'm on short term disability because my I developed an anxiety problem that was causing me to spiral), and lawyer (I was told there isn't a job for me to come back to when I'm better) all delicately danced around the prospect of depression/suidality. I'm lucky that I have some great things in my life that make it easy to tackle those questions head on.

    Talk to a specialist.

  • I mean the steel and aluminum will probably be sold to China so I'm not sure how much better that is in terms of dictatorship, but they are more stable/reliable I suppose.

This is going to cause curtailments at plants, and real hardships for some whole communities.

  • The only things i look for in a shoe are small pieces of gravel that sometimes get in there.

But seriously: comfort/ support, and a big 'Ole loop on the back to make them easy to pull on.

  • I'm not very impressed with this opinion article.

In the section titled "the problem with advance consent" it spends four paragraphs talking about things unrelated to advance consent, and then just says "what if the patient would feel differently now that they have more experience".

Idon't want our society to be killing people because they live in poverty that gives them unbearable health issues. But we shouldn't be preventing all people with unbearable health issues from dying with dignity while we sort that out, and we shouldn't be denying those in poverty the same right. We need to eliminate poverty. Maybe there is inadequate oversight and accountability of maid but the article doesn't make any suggestions. This article feels like a person dogmatically opposed to maid throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks

  • My dad once had an engine failure shortly after take off, and had to ditch into a bean field. He was fine plane was only a little damaged. I helped him fix the wheel, and get the plane (well, ultralight) to the highest corner of the field so that he could take off down the hill.

  • I recall from elementary game theory that the ability to provably bind oneself to an action (ie make a promise you can't back out of) is extremely valuable in negotiation. It is hugely important in our day to day lives (loans, service contracts etc), but also politics.

The US ability to have people believe their promises has been shredded by Trump (Eg Iran Nuclear Treaty). We just renegotiated NAFTA to the USMCA, and now all of a sudden it's no good? How can we trust that this deal will last more than 15 minutes? How can we have any sort of partnership with an organization like this?

  • This is my concern. Not that he wants to manipulate her to harm her, but that he wants to "save her". Her being subjected to that pressure could seriously damage her relationship with her family.

  • It's really disappointing that there is so much opposition to the existence of sogi minority people. My position is that rainbow crosswalks should not be installed in places where people with minority sogi are not safe.

It's sort of a self selection. We shouldn't tell people with minority sogi they are safe and welcome if they are not.
