  • I don't like this weird culture of paying people different wages for the same jobs.

Ideally people would be paid the value of their labour. People with the same job often have different labour values. So that's a good reason for people to have different pay for the same job. A roofer that can lay more shingles, waste less material to bad cuts, and build roofs that don't need leak in the warranty period deserves to be paid a lot more than one that is slow, wasteful and sloppy.

But there are also bad reasons for people to get paid more for the same job. Eg Skin colour, height, corporate bullshitting, gender.

I agree compensation transparency is good but I don't think the answer is new hires snooping on people's pay stubs.

  • My understanding based entirely on zero evidence is that our brains recognize faces based on that person's differences from 'average'. Where 'average' is the average face you see/ consider. And your brain mostly examines the parameters that help you distinguish between the people you normally consider.

So like a person's eyes are one standard deviation larger than average and 5 standard decisions further apart. And their nose is 2 standard deviations longer than average and their nostrils are 1 standard deviation smaller than average.

Ethnic groups will have some parameters that vary a lot between them and some parameters that don't, your brain just needs to learn. Basically just keep trying.

  • Honestly, I couldn't quite sympathize with her.

    Why not?

She complains they were giving her too much to do? Apparently rest of the team also had a lot on their plate as well and most of them are still in the company.

What does that have to do with sympathizing with her?

No sympathy for Chanie Wenjack because lots of his classmates managed to graduate?

  • You can get heatpumps with natural gas backup(/supplement). But that can affect rebate eligibility.

My wife and I replaced our oil burning furnace with a heat pump in 2021. No natural gas, but we are in Vancouver, milder winters than Atlantic Canada.

Also I did get nervous watching Texans die during their cold snap/ power outage whenever that was.

  • Tesla spent years building a brand identity that is intimately woven together with Musk.

It worked well for a long time but it makes sense if people lose faith in Musk they lose faith in Tesla. Because he is synonymous with the brand.

Lol so are the CEOs of all the other manufacturers people to look up to and admire?

They haven't built their brands around the reputation of their ceo.

Would I buy a Tesla? Ya if the car itself is good.

How can you evaluate if a car is good? It has recently been revealed that Tesla/Musk was exaggerating their range so severely that Tesla owners thought their cars were defective. Tesla has been trading on a reputation of 'goodness' that it didn't deserve.

Tesla is seeing repercussions from risks they took tying their brand so tightly with Musk.

  • this is just a virtue signal to begin with. And the argument against it is just a signal too.

It's almost like the politicians are playing politics.

I feel like sentencing should be based on forseeable harms, not victim characteristics.

Parliament shouldn't put pregnant people above people with other vulnerabilities.

if abortion becomes illegal they could use this bill to say doctors willfully causes harm to a pregnant woman.

I think the concern is more along the lines of, if there is a court case seeking to recognize the personhood of a fetus, then anti choice folks will point to this law and say "see there is precedent, the criminal code considers pregnant women to have more rights" and a biased Supreme Court can use this as a fig leaf to overturn abortion rights.

  • Yeah I think I was in a stupor when I commented. I don't think I even tried to understand your comment. My apologies. But now that I am trying, I am struggling to understand the notation.

  • Well what about the fact that after 34 people the entire population is tied to the tracks. What are the chances that one person out of 35 wants to destroy humanity?

Also thing the entire human population to the tracks is going to cause some major logistical problems, how are you going to feed them all?

  • In English the correct way to pronounce something is the way that will most reliably communicate to your intended audience without ambiguity or distraction.

Since my intention is usually to convey my superior knowledge of trivia and/or to stir shit up, I pronounce it with a soft g.
