  • I'm a person that saw this and thought "YES!".

It's a way to make my mindless scrolling a little bit less mindless. It's not a Wikipedia alternative it's a tiktok alternative (I don't use tiktok, but I understand why people do, my attention span is also shattered). Obviously it's not going to replace looking things up on Wikipedia, and I love exploring links in Wikipedia articles, but you don't know what you don't know so this seems like a good way to learn about things you didn't know you were interested in.

  • They did actually sue someone for the exclusive right to call themselves "crappy tire":

IIRC someone was hosting a Canadian Tire complaint website "crappytire.com" and in trying to get it shut down Canadian Tire used the legal argument that this person was infringing Canadian Tire's identity ("We are the legitimate Crappy Tire, and this person is an imposter") and the domain should be surrendered to them. They won. edit: They lost.

  • Yeah I don't think there's any basis to the quote.

Interestingly the earliest composed Christian document that has been recovered (the didache, the copy we have is from Ca. 1000 CE, but seems to be in the original Greek) condemns infanticide, specifically including by exposure to the elements. It also prohibits private property so the document is not taken authoritatively by many modern christians.

  • Violence is the only way a dictator will be deposed. History has proven it well.

Is that true? What about South Korea and Taiwan?

I agree about it being baffling to see so many 'freedom loving Americans' so blind to the nature of the current administration.

  • And the new one is NORTH American.

People using "American" to refer to anyone from the western continent (from a euro centric perspective) is conventional in some parts or the world. It's not the convention in Canada, we bristle at the thought of being labeled Americans.

  • When we import food/drug manufacturing equipment we often accept American certifications as compliant with Canadian standards. If a company can say they are compliant FDA or NSF while facing no risk of facing an actual inspection/audit then we may have to exercise more scrutiny ourselves.

  • If you sincerely can't keep track of an acronym like LGBTQIA2S, I totally understand. I find it helpful to use people with minority "Sexual Orientations and Gender Identites" (SOGI). You could say

    people with minority SOGIs

    Or

    SOGI minorities

    Or

    SOGIm

It's not a super widespread abbreviation, so I'd recommend spelling it initially as I did in my first paragraph. I don't think it's best practice to say "SOGIs" Because everyone has a SOGI and typically we're trying to talk specifically about those that face(d) disenfranchisement and bigoted violence.

If you're not sincerely struggling with the acronym, and enjoy trivializing people for fun, I hope you think of me everything you stub your toe.

  • I saw a quote in the newspaper this morning:

We were losing hundreds of billions of dollars with China now we're essentially not doing business with China. Therefore, we're saving hundreds of billions of dollars. Very simple.

It's just so incredibly wrong and stupid.

  • I can only speak from my own experience.

My strategy is committing to planning my day at the beginning of the day (9:10AM after I've gotten my kids to school) and then talking with my wife before bed about how well I managed to stick to the plan. Ie did I actually plan tasks for the day, did I accomplish those tasks, is there anything she'd like me to add to tomorrow's tasks etc.

Planning my day includes assigning time frames for the tasks, including one task right after planning. If I know I'm likely to want to play video games that day, plan a time and duration, and set an alarm on my phone to interrupt my play at the time I thought I should stop.

Try really hard to frame things in an analog way. Ie As progress instead of as victory or failure.

What I mean is you didn't do exactly what I asked, and that's fine you made real progress towards developing a sustainable solution.

I use a paper productivity planner to plan my day and I've found it very helpful. maybe do 30 minutes of research into options available to you.
