  • Your explanation makes sense to me, an uninvolved spectator with no particular knowledge of generators.

Maybe you direct the generator exhaust over the exterior of the tank? Would that be adequate heat?

My thought was to recall that my 20# propane tank has some sort of safety valve integrated into it that will clamp outflow if there is too big a surge in flow. Flow needs to be 0 for a minute or so for it to reset. But that doesn't explain your experience with the larger tank.

  • Okay, I think $80 Canadian for a case, psu, mobo, cpu, & ram is sounding pretty reasonable. I just don't know of its enough processing power for the video stuff. But I guess if not I can upgrade the mobo/cpu or add a graphics card.

    Thanks, that channel looks great.

Re offsite backup: Yes I don't have so many family photos that it will be difficult/ expensive to store online. But I need to get them together first.

  • The Pope is woke! Gender ideology IS toxic.

We should support the catholic church in their initiative to reform their sexist gender roles.

I'm impressed the patriarch of Rome is so invested in dismantling the patriarchy.

... wait that's not what he means? He supports highly defined gender roles? What a toxic ideology.

  • I live in Canada and there is a university professor that had police visit his house because he took some pictures of an oil project that was being protested while he was on a walking trail near the university.

It was an interview on the cbc several years ago. He was a prof at SFU, I assume it was the trans mountain pipeline expansion.

  • I love the spirit. We need people making demands like this to move the needle. It's totally insane that it's still possible buy ornamental gas fireplaces that don't even heat the space.

Or that we use propane heaters on patios to heat the outdoors.

Re banning replacement has furnaces... maybe tie it to the scope of work. Like if your furnace breaks down in the winter and you're just replacing it that's one thing, but if you're actually renovating that's something else.

  • It would be in the public interest for there to exist a digital town square that was simultaneously: free of hate speech, free of spam, free-to-use, not designed to manipulate you, and not spying on you (beyond what's required to prevent spam/hatespeech and investigate crimes).

I don't know how achievable that actually is but it would be interesting to see a proposal.

  • The article doesn't quote the family saying that the shirt is racist. So I suppose you could nitpick the CTV title writer there. (Maybe they said it, but it wasn't included in the article though).

The family is quoted as saying the comedians are racist.

They do seem to have a pattern of joking about dead indigenous women/children.

They've also joked about how anybody that complains to HR about workplace harassment is going to have a bad time in the oil patch. While what that comedian was saying is probably true, he was celebrating it, not criticizing it.

They've also presented an "explanation" of the shirt in which they claim the shirt is meant as a criticism of the failure of the state to protect indigenous women. If you listen to it it's not a very convincing argument, it sounds pretty disingenuous.

Edit to add: To suggest Pickton's victims were all 'hookers', is probably the most racist part.

  • One of the challenges is of course that the wealthy don't get paid. They own and control assets that appreciate in value.

What if we ended private ownership of businesses. I don't mean ending ownership of businesses, but that every business became publicly tradeable. No more private ownership of businesses.

I'm not actually advocating this (yet), just curious what people think would happen if we did this.

  • A few people in here conflating randomness with luck, as if the existence of probabilistic outcomes means that a person can have luck. Some people have fortunate outcomes from probabilistic processes and call that good luck. Some people: negative, and bad. The fortunate (too often) deny the probabilistic nature of the process, and call the unfortunate "weak". The unfortunate decry the inequity of the outcomes and call the fortunate the benefactors of unearned luck.

Ron is doing a great job of demonstrating unscientific, motivated reasoning, since acknowledging the possibility of unfortunate outcomes for the "strong" undermines the entitlements of the fortunate. Which can be very damaging to their psyche/ego.

The problem our society faces is that outcomes often aren't probabilistic enough. The main determinants of fortune are too often not luck, but the ability of one's parents to create opportunity for, and invest in/ support their children. The people that end up with favorable life outcomes have more ability to do the preceding, and/or reinforce systems that increase the probability of their children having fortunate outcomes (ie decrease the probabilistic nature of the favourability of life outcomes).

The meme is a bit of physics and a bit of sociology.

  • The sculptor reportedly said:

    "Le Coq c'est moi"

    "The Cock is me"

    Also related:

Coq means rooster in French and is not used as an insult or a euphemism for the penis at all.

    But your mileage may vary.

  • This is not a good opinion piece. The piece title suggests that other parties cough conservatives cough have better plans, then doesn't mention any, then says liberal bail reforms do seem to be working, then concludes with, "we need to collect more data".

Wow "we should study violent crime to better understand its root causes" what a thought provoking opinion.

I had to look up what the crime severity index is.

The Crime Severity Index tracks changes in the severity of police-reported crime by accounting for both the amount of crime reported by police in a given jurisdiction and the relative seriousness of these crimes. It tells us not only how much crime is coming to the attention of police, but also about the seriousness of that crime.

The specific weight for any given type of offence consists of two parts. The first component is the incarceration rate for that offence type. This is the proportion of people convicted of the offence who are sentenced to time in prison. The second component is the average (mean) length of the prison sentence, in days, for the specific type of offence.

I'm still a little confused. If the number of all crimes including muggings stays the same but they start to punish mugging more severely, the index goes up? Even though the number of crimes is the same?

Also the data he is referencing is for 2022, like he can't wait for 2022 data?
