Plus you don't have to commit like with a cigarette. The people I know who vape will just instinctively just pick it up and have a single huff'n'puff every couple of minutes, whereas when they were addicted to smoking it was five minutes of getting up, going outside and standing in the cold/rain/whatever, dealing with ash, dealing with the awful smell of stale smoke on their hands, etc. The lack of convenience with smoking cigarettes meant they'd only have one once every three-quarters of an hour or so most of the time, whereas the vaping is constant.
It'd make for a good anti-spam measure if there was a limit to the number of DMs users could send to other people who don't follow them back. It'd mean people can still use Twitter DMs like a normal messaging service (which isn't something I care for, but I know some people use it like that).
As it is, it just feels similar to the whole "rate limiting the number of tweets people can view per day" thing, where they're taking the most obvious route to reducing bandwidth usage by restricting users.
I saw it this afternoon, I had a great time! It wasn't exactly what I was expecting, although I can't say I know exactly what I was expecting going into it... It was a lot more political than I expected, and a lot more thoughtful.
It certainly lacks subtlety, and beats you around the head with its themes (feminism, toxic masculinity, the patriarchy, empowerment, finding and accepting yourself). To be clear, I don't think it lacking subtlety is a bad thing at all; it makes it very clear what points it's addressing, and doesn't leave anything down to personal experiences, or interpretations of nuanced lines. And it has a lot of fun with it!
Apparently right-wing people are upset with it, though. Because of course they are. It's about Barbie being a strong, independent woman. It's got a lot of diversity, and it's not shy about the fact that its diversity is because Barbie dolls themselves have a lot of diversity, so yes, it's very deliberately forced diversity. It has a trans actress in - I didn't even realise she was trans until a few minutes ago when I was looking up why right-wing people are upset, but apparently it's a terrible thing. It doesn't peddle any propaganda about traditional family values either, if you can believe such a thing (which is particularly upsetting to Matt Gaetz' wife for some reason).
It's fun. It's funny. It's thoughtful. And Ryan Gosling is fantastic in it. (Margot Robbie is very good, too, but her character is a little less colourful). It won't be something that will change your entire outlook on life, or that you'll be thinking about every day for the next six months, but it's a solid 8/10, and unless you froth at the mouth at the idea of women having shudder aGeNcY, you'll probably have a good time with it!
I personally opted for kbin.social - I like the UI more, I like the community in the kbin-specific threads, and I like that I have the option to follow Mastodon users and interact with the whole micro-blogging side of the fediverse as well as using the "threadiverse" (Lemmy, etc). I think the occasional issues are bound to happen regardless of your instance, purely because it's such a new and growing platform. kbin's largely been rather stable, though.
The biggest downside for a lot of people is that kbin isn't supported by most of the mobile apps yet. Personally, I don't mind this - there's a PWA (progressive web app - essentially just a fancy bookmark to the mobile site that keeps it in its own unique browser instance with the tabs, menus, etc, hidden so it looks like an app) that works really nicely. The mobile site is really nice to use in general, so I've no issues just using this until a killer app comes along.
Yeah, 1899 certainly had a lot more spectacle to it, also. And that feeling of absolute dread in the first two episodes really was something else. I think Dark is the better show, personally (and not only because it got an ending, although obviously that helps), but I was definitely upset when it came out that 1899 had been cancelled.
I can't wait to find out what their next project is!
You can trace a direct line from GamerGate through to Brexit, Trump becoming US president, and the formation of the "alt-right", "incel" and "anti-woke" movements. GamerGate was essentially the testing grounds.
That's okay, it can be a little hard to wrap your head around!
What helped me is thinking of it like email: I can use a Gmail account, you can use a Hotmail account, and someone else can use their own private mail server. We all go to different websites/programs/apps to access our emails, and those programs might have different features, layouts, etc, but we can all still email each other. They're all federated with each other. And if you start getting emails from marketing@spamcentral.com, promotions@spamcentral.com, etc, you can block the entire spamcentral.com email domain - ie, defederate from it.
The fediverse works very similarly. We can all use different websites with different layouts and a few different features, but all of them can communicate with each other and show common content because they're federated with each other.
There's a big benefit to this: no single company can control the fediverse. If your instance - feddit.uk - has to shut down, or it turns out to be run by nazis, or they start trying to charge users vast amounts of money to use the instance, or make some other move you don't like, you can just make an account on another instance and continue to use the rest of the fediverse. Maybe a few communities that were hosted on your previous instance will become inaccessible, but the larger fediverse will still be available.

You're on feddit.uk and I'm on kbin.social and we're both still here, commenting on a lemmy.world thread. Unless you're browsing by local (ie, only posts that are made on your local instance), or your instance is very defederation-happy, it doesn't have to mean much.
It'll almost certainly be his personal phone. A recurring issue with the tory government has been that they use their personal phones for government business.
I like kbin better, but yes, the threadiverse feels a lot more cosy and positive! There are a few niche communities I miss, but I'm sure they'll take off in time.
They make it blatantly fake on purpose to weed out the more intelligent people who are less likely to fall for a scam. The scammers don't want to spend hours reeling someone one in by appearing legitimate, only for the person to disengage at the first sign of a scam. They'd rather just filter those people out right away with something blatantly fake, and the people who are left are the ones susceptible to being scammed.
It's a weird one. I'm not really a fan of consolidation, monopolies and huge acquisitions like this in general. But at the same time, like you said, ABK is awful at the moment and I feel like things can only really improve with this deal. I also think that, of the big gaming companies, Xbox is probably the most consumer-friendly brand at the moment. Plus, selfishly, I'm a Game Pass subscriber and this benefits me, ha.
I think, in the short-to-medium term, this merger will probably be beneficial for ABK (and its employees), Microsoft/Xbox and most consumers. In the long term, it really depends on Xbox staying benevolent.

If you weren't familiar with the subreddit: it's a discussion-focused community for having more high-level, in-depth conversations about games and their design. Think essays and random deep-dives rather than memes, questions, gameplay footage.
I agree that the lack of more specific, focused communities - like game-specific ones - here is the biggest drawback compared to Reddit right now. With time, I'm sure that'll change, and right now, jumpstarting communities you want to see here is a good idea if you have the ability to.
