  • My ISP is a local deal, well-known for protecting privacy, and run by an absolute nerd (in the best way possible, also outspoken about privacy, FOSS, and other such things). Their customer service is second-to-none; I had an issue with my static IP a couple years back, and had an actual engineer on the line within a few hours. On a weekend.

It's XMission. I dropped Comcast for them once they were in my area. Comcast can climb up a cactus.

  • Yeah I just straight up pirate movies now, I don't even try to hide it from people anynore. It's clear to me at this point that all these companies care about is getting richer by the minute off the backs of the common man, and their excuses for doing so are getting more and more pathetic.

  • Only one of my cars has just one of those things (2015 Toyota Highlander and it's the blind spot monitor). That aside, all of my vehicles - cars and motorcycles - are paid off. I'm not going into debt just to have nannies yelling at me.

My vehicles are a means to an end. I would absolutely love more public transit, but there is just a single train station about 12 miles from my house, while my work is only 6 miles in the same direction. "You could bike" you might say, which is a fantastic idea. However, 90% of my commute is on a 55mph rural highway with minimal shoulders and zero bike lanes. It's literally a perfect candidate for a bus route, yet there are none, and I am not risking my life on a bicycle next to 55MPH traffic during commuting hours.

Now tell me how I'm the problem.

  • planning on running a number of docker containers and a couple of vms.

Just FYI, you can probably do ALL of that on a $200 Dell Optiplex 7050 SFF.

Source: my $200 Dell Optiplex 7050 SFF running 3 VMs, 3 LXC containers, and 16 docker containers - not including the multiple containers within the Nextcloud AIO "mastercontainer". There is plenty of overhead to spare.

  • The thing they had going for them is it's idiot proof to the point where it pissed off anyone who knew what they were doing.

I'm solidly in that group lol. I had a 5th gen iPod Video in high school, and you bet your ass it drove me absolutely insane that I couldn't just drag and drop music onto it. The "manually manage device" setting was an absolute godsend, for sure, but I ended up installing RockBox anyway.

I still have that iPod somewhere...

  • It's 2025. You shouldn't need an external device to manage the files of the already perfectly-capable device that's in your pocket. I manage to do so just fine with my Android. I can download whatever media I want directly to it and play said media with whatever player app I choose.
