  • As a friend once wrote, “wearing a watch is like being handcuffed to time.”

This is pretty out-of-touch. I mean, a lot of us kinda need to know the time at some point. It takes a special kind of privilege to be able to unshackle yourself from any semblance of a schedule, a privilege that not many of us have.

  • G1 and G2 got hot. G3 less so, and G4 seems to be doing pretty good, though it does get warm at times, especially when loaded.

The G4's thermal profile kinda reminds me of my old Nexus 4's Snapdragon S4 Pro. I loaded that bitch down and watched it soar over 100C many, many times 😅. I undervolted it so it ran a bit cooler. It was truly the perfect device at the time.

Ultimately it comes down to your personal experience. There are going to be people who shit on everything that isn't a top-tier Snapdragon. Don't listen to them. I wouldn't even worry about benchmarks for mobile CPUs - at this point, those are only for people who want to shove it in everyone else's faces.

  • The ~2010 runaway Toyota hysteria was ultimately blamed on mechanical problems less than half the time. Floor mats jamming the pedal, drivers mixing up gas/brake pedals in panic, downright lying to evade a speeding ticket, etc were cause for many cases.

I owned an FJ80 Land Cruiser when that happened. I printed up a couple stickers for myself, and for a buddy who owned a Tacoma, that said "I'm not speeding, my pedal's stuck!" (yes I'm aware the FJ80 was slow as dogshit, that didn't stop me from speeding).

  • I believe it, I would love an open source alternative. But like I said, any company/group/foundation/etc willing to pull this off would need a massive budge to get it to Wacom/Apple level of refinement. And by massive, I'm talking millions at the least in order to pay devs, do marketing (because people need to buy it to be viable), and probably a lot of other things I haven't considered.

    One can dream...

  • I don't disagree with your premise though. It's just incredibly difficult to get to Apple/Wacom levels of stylus precision and software refinement without a massive budget.

I mean, just look at GIMP: hugely capable software, but horrendous UX/UI...

  • The server is the main purpose - it's a replacement for Google Photos. The app is an extension of the server.

But yes, the frustration is real. I have the infrastructure set up at home to handle this stuff; but for the layperson who doesn't do this stuff, I can imagine it's really irritating to come across Immich in the app store, download it, then suddenly get prompted to point it to a server that doesn't exist.
