  • I think the national participation level is at a maximum possible. Many understand that voting is worthless and have disengaged; and there is no way to get those people to vote without making new and transparent ballot counting methods.

The USA is very complex and there are states which have honest voting. I think, but don’t know, that participation is higher in those states as a rule.

  • Can this actually happen in the current political environment? I see some bureaucrats making plans and trying to use momentum from other years to make it happen ; I don’t see higher level arses talking about it much.

  • Something not mentioned in the comments; In my experience Americans do not really understand democracy ; they understand voting. But ignore everything after they leave the voting booth, including how their votes are counted ( which in much of the USA are some private companies who hide their methods and do not allow recounts). Any United Nations method used to detect cheating shows massive amounts of ballot stuffing. This is ignored.

My point mentioning the above is that the United States is not a democracy by any metric, but pretends more than any other country that it is. And because the people of the USA fundamentally do not understand this, any improvement in the USA, improving quality of life, cannot be by democratic methods.

  • I think Trump 8 years ago would have done this ,had some back ass strategy; but now he is really senile. People are reading too much into these contradictions said by a very confused man

That is very scary considering he is setting up a nuclear attack, or at least going through the motions.

  • As an American who could have done more to help stop this, I think all adult Americans, including me, share some collective guilt.

There is so much more everyone could have done the last few years to head this off.

There are always excuses, I have a long list myself.

  • I wonder if there is a correlation with percentage of a state’s population in large cities.

Even today, there is huge difference in Texas between the metro regions, like Houston, and counties far away. With the further away a county the lower the life expectancy.

Houston has the same life expectancy as Hawaii, but not so much a hundred miles away from Houston

  • It is rather both sides, isn’t it?

But, after poking around lemmy, I have decided there is value in all instances. There will be communities nestled in between the stuff I do not like. I like and dislike much on lemmy

  • looking for a instance with the fewest trolls, bots, and anyone that likes to take things to the extremes.

All the instances are good in their own way, but at least one will irritate you very much, and it’s always different. There are ways each one can make you go “why???”

There are commenters who will call one or more instances bad things. That may or may not be accurate for you.

Each large instance has one or more crazy mods, all instances mostly have decent mods. Each instance will have multiple examples about why it’s good or horrible.

  • I would happily reply I do not see any leftists in congress ; I see a handful of left leaning moderates.

But yes, I believe most of congress are creatures of the complex webs of real power. Those few who are not, carefully observe the bounds they know they cannot cross.

And since I believe states without paper ballots, counted in front of witnesses and allowing recounts are not proper democracies. Who knows who would really win the primaries at the state and local levels? Much less the general elections.

There is no choice, none at all, on so many different ways and levels .

What makes it so much worse is that 95% of the politically active people are just fine with all the above

  • I think there has always been a lack of justice in the USA; we see this power struggle now because the powerful are fragmented.

Which is one reason why I think protests will become less no matter what; the track record is horrible . Most politically active people today don’t have the instincts or reactions needed.

It’s not all bad news, this will create a political vacuum where the left can start to gain
