  • It's done usually because of compatability. You can take a base layer HDR/HDR10 video, then extract the DV rpu, sync it, and inject it into the HDR stream. To answer your question, it is using both the HDR base layer with DV dynamic metada.

For webs, it's usually P5, and the conversion is apparently good enough that it doesn't make a difference for most people. For P7, you are going to lose the enhancement layer when encoding, but that's the price you pay for saving space.

There are instances, especially with discs, when the film is indeed graded differently, but the good encoders/remuxers pay attention to this.

  • If you have one of those really annoying PDFs where the structure is all crazy or some letters are pictures, etc., it is possible to OCR them with a mask on page numbers.

There are also tools which can just extract the text elements and smush them together, but as others have said, this doesn't always works as intended.

  • This is my personal strategy, works pretty well:

    • Grab a repack from fitgirl /dodi / kaoscrew via torrent when possible. Use the official sites.
    • Check gog-games, if it's available without drm
    • Check rin (Steam Underground) if it's not too large
    • Grab from GGn or whatever other private tracker might have it.
    • Get straight scene release, if available, as last resort.

This covers probably 99% of PC games, emulators are a different story.

As for getting started, grab 7z (an archiving utility) and know how to mount an ISO. Stay safe, don't download from sketchy sites. Since you are dealing with executables, some things will look (and act) like viruses, use your best judgement.

  • I've seen a few ddl sites that host that kind of content, they're all pretty sketch. There are some forums out there where people upload and there is a community (can't remember any off-hand). Best bet is trackers, unfortunately for you.

  • Setup an rsync systemd job & timer on your plex server. I think that's be the most efficient method. Can also use a cron job if you're more comfortable with that. Either way, the rsync would be a one liner unless you have to map different source and destination directiories.

  • I would assume that all data possible is gathered and stored somehow. For all intents and purposes, this is a public forum. Specific instances might deal with data in different ways, but the nature of federation is that your data is passed around and viewable by others.
