  • Oh god I remember that. Luckily in 2003 my main computer was scraped together from discarded parts at my father's day job, so it was ethernet only

In 2024 on a laptop I still have wifi problems though. Most recently, if I closed and opened the laptop lid (suspend + resume), the wifi hardware just disappeared off the face of the kernel.

Turns out that the iwlwifi kernel module just irreversibly crashes when the laptop suspends and can only be fixed with a reboot.

So I had the fun task learning about systemd pre-suspend hooks to unload the driver before suspend and load it again on resume.

Turns out wifi drivers still suck in 2024

  • Every company enshittifies eventually, it's a fact of life.

It might take a while but it will happen. Eventually Gabe will step down or die, new leadership will come in and the enshittification will commence.

Or they sell to a competitor who will do big cuts to remove now redundant positions and you guessed it - the enshittification will commence.

  • Yes, you can sideload apps from this century into Debian and run them in an isolated environment with dependencies also from this century :)

Tbh I'm surprised that the Debian kernel is new enough to support cgroups /s

  • This used to bother me way more than it does now.

The Knaming scheme was so Koff putting that I refused to use KDE for years based purely on how much it annoyed me.

But it's been 15 years now and GNOME has turned into Fisher Price. KDE things always seemed to work better, like Phonon works 1000 times better than GStreamer and apps like Krita and Kdenlive are far more useful than GNOME equivalents.

Thinking about giving KDE a spin with the new Plasma 6 release

  • Who cares?

Ubuntu is a shell of what it once was. They're not going to make Snap optional, they need to justify its existence by releasing everything as snaps with no alternative so you have to use it.

Or, just use Debian if you like Debian-style distros?

Or, wait for it - this is gonna sound a bit radical but hear me out - give Fedora a try? Flatpak instead and unlike Debian Stable has packages from this century

    Inb4 btw I use Arch

  • This movie for me too. The scene I most remember was a dude talking to another dude through a window. The camera is facing out the window. Then the outside dudes face changes and the camera switches to outside and his whole lower half had been eaten

Was scared of sleeping on the ground for years incase I got swallowed

  • Eugenics is how we turned wolves into dogs and selectivity bred specific working instincts into them. It's how we bred disease resistant crop varieties or crops with heavier / larger fruits.

Wait, if it works everywhere else, surely it works on humans too?
