  • Right, but if Mali do reclaim all the .ml domains out there then there's little option? Yes, federation will break for .ml and yes it'll be like starting over on a fresh instance but only in terms of federation - all the users, communities, posts and comments will still exist, just under a new domain. Once the new domain starts federating people will catch on, especially if the news is posted on the larger instances.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying its not a problem, I'm just not sure its a total disaster either.

  • I might be unaware of some technical issues here but why not just get another domain, point it at the server, then update the database to change all references to lemmy.ml to thenewdomain.tld and then make an announcement on a couple of the bigger instances? Federation will take care of propagating the news far and wide. Then, as users hear the news they can just login using the same details and those of us subscribed to Communities on .ml can just update our subscriptions.

I mean, it's not a perfect solution but it'll work, surely?

  • I don't think (sadly) they'll lose all 3 but even losing just one would be, historically, a shock. Even a decent swing to Labour in BoJo's seat would be a large concern to the Tories.

  • You can create an Antenna (top right of your timeline header) and add hastags (and specific words) to it. You can have multiple Antennas.

  • Calckey (or Firefish now I guess) is a really great product, its much more customisable than Mastodon in look and feel, it's easy to create site-wide themes for example.

  • Plume is the main fediverse blogging application but I don't think it's actively maintained.

Micro.blog offer a paid-for service (starts at $5 a month) and the blogs can be federated.

  • Tech is fine but applying for permission to have kids (based on what criteria?) and having to present my DNA everywhere to track everything I do is several steps into overbearing state control.

  • You can't complain about the dangers of totaliterianism and also make your last two bullet points with a straight face.

  • Capitalism has led us to believe the only true value of something is financial. Education shouldn't just be about positioning you for a good career. We've substituted human morals for religious dogma. We need David Lynch to do one more season of Twin Peaks.

  • I'm running a calckey instance and have no issue. Akkomas site claims it federates with Mastodon so is it maybe a non-Akkoma issue? Something in your server setup maybe?

  • Yep, I use Mull on my mobile. Supports various privacy related add-ons too.

  • Check the link in OP's post.

  • Subscriber numbers mean little. Take a look at the trend for the posts per day and comments per day graphs. They're far more accurate indicators of the level of engagement actual users are having with reddit.

I've just checked for 10 of the subs I used to subscribe to, 2 of which have over 30m subscribers - all of them have the same downward trend in terms of posts and comments. I'm not saying reddit is in trouble but less new content is being created and that which is is being talked about less, eventually that will take a toll.

  • Just because multiple companies are doing it doesn't make it less shady. They're literally selling you 'rights' to content that isn't theirs to sell.

  • Privacy invasive or not, it's not right what they're doing and, in my opinion, speaks to their ethics as a company. That in turn leads me to mistrust choices they might make in the future, including regarding privacy.

  • I guess I am asking morally. I expect this sort of thing from Bing and Google but it surprised me to see a company that is privacy focused basically trampling over someone elses IP to the point they feel they can offer rights to someone elses content and make money from it.

Obviously, this was before I learned what sort of person Eich is. Now I'm not surprised. I guess we all have to decide if something goes against our own principles enough to use/not use something.

  • You don't think there's anything wrong with selling you the 'rights' to other people's content?
