  • "They're all the same!" my FIL equating Harris to the convicted felon and conman who flew with Epstein.

"I didn't vote" said my socialist relative who ignored the myriad policies Harris was objectively better than Trump on because of a right-wing wedge-driving message about Palestinians (haven't heard a peep on Gaza since election, curiously).

Poorly educated minds led astray by disinformation.

  • Single biggest determinant as to how people voted was education attainment.

GenZ and presumably Alpha are more education averse, too. I thought they'd better navigate disinformation online but alas...

  • No I wouldn't say a wash, personally. If you knew you were going to be under the purview of a Trump DOJ AG and they'd make your life a living hell, sure some might be able to resist for a little but you wouldn't actually be able to do much. Trump can fire him anyway.

  • I'm not them and I'd happily campaign my ass off for AOC, but I expect Whitmer. Who I'd take over the likes of Shapiro or Newsom any day.

  • To Wray's credit, he testified that right-wing extremists were the #1 domestic terrorist threat.

If he was a Trump yes man, they would've just had him stay in. In reality, it's probably closer to him just preserving his job prospects in the private sector and a bit of cowardice not dissimilar to Mueller and Comey.

  • I appreciate your thoughtful and honest comment. Yeah, I don't know... I'm really close with both my parents. That certainly makes it worse. We've been through a lot of shit. My parents separated once in my teens, then fully completed the divorce under COVID under my house with my wife and our first kid. Was a nightmare that made covid orders of magnitude worse — but we got through it. I got my dad out of his suicidal/homicidal mania; I got my mom clean off alcohol with the help of my sister and wife.... They've both still got a lot of flaws, but at least now my parents are at least on speaking terms for the sake of their grand-kids and us. In some ways, despite all the turmoil of the world, I know these are going to be some of the better years where I can enjoy their company and see the nostalgia in their eyes as they spend time with my kids. We grew up religious but my whole family shifted toward agnosticism over the years, so yeah, I don't expect much after death but it's hopeful thought despite my better judgement I suppose...

  • I'm sorry, friend. Hope you're doing well.

Yeah I honestly love the stories. Heard them all a thousand times, of course, but they never get old — especially knowing...

Anyways I can weather a lot of pain, but when it comes to my loved ones I'm a wreck.

  • The mortality of my parents. My mind is often stuck in the future of what ifs; but this is an inevitable event that will come sooner or later and it terrifies me. I do my best to cherish the time I'm fortunate to have with them while channeling energy into my own kids. I know it's the natural cycle of things, but still... Life is hard man.

  • “Violence is never the answer, but people can be pushed only so far,” Warren added. “This is a warning that if you push people hard enough, they lose faith in the ability of their government to make change, lose faith in the ability of the people who are providing the health care to make change, and start to take matters into their own hands in ways that will ultimately be a threat to everyone.”

  • That will be one piece of good news this year if he is dead. Fuck that piece of shit. We should've listened to our Syrian ambassador Robert Ford and fully supported the FSA.

  • Oil, tobacco (I guess you said drug) companies, Monsanto/Bayer, nursing home and hospice admins...

  • It's almost like these folks are the real "enemy from within" (Trump's words, not mine) the whole time.

  • "It could be anyone. Anywhere. Any time! God forbid my picture is plastered everywhere. All the bodyguard protection barely Donnie, protectafter all!"

  • lol Musk dumped triple this in PA on a whim.

After all, $60,000,000 to Musk is what spending $20 is to someone making 100k.

  • File that under when I care for your opinion.

If you had respect and do care, ask why.

  • Not quite the same gap but I grew to be good friends with a work buddy in his 40s when I was 25.

Throughout my life I tended to connect better with people older than me.

But if you have bad vibes beyond just the age then it may be worth talking candidly with your son about your concerns.

  • Carl Sagan wrote in 1995:

I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...

The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance

While there were always idiots, they often lacked the capacity to engage or equip themselves with such a sophisticated web of lies to prop up their beliefs. As such, Joe Schmoe from Bumfuck, Alabama had a limited platform and so could go on his blissfully ignorant way without much harm beyond his county line.

These days? They all communicate together and domestic and foreign operatives can reach them all the same to stoke division.

    Crazy to watch.

  • Honestly I'm all for it; then handing the keys to Trump lmao.

Or implement a No Fly Zone and fully commit NATO forces to air defense. See Putin squirm on what to do and how to react. Makes the Putin-Trump relationship tense. Trump backing down would be seen as weak. Putin wouldn't retaliate because he wouldn't risk losing his puppet.

  • I like this. Bonus: read children's books and bilingual books; watch news or children's shows in Spanish.

Find a good way to crunch vocabulary memorization with digital flashcard programs you can work during any downtime you have.

  • I'm mostly surprised by the "faces consequences" part.
