  • I have mixed feelings here. I legitimately paid ($1, once, a decade ago) for a calculator app and feel it was a great value (I still prefer it to this day). But then again the free version was fine too and the one-time payment was essentially a donation to the developer for a great app that unlocked... Themes...

  • My biggest problem with systemd is that Red Hat has basically used it to push their-way-or-the-highway on many Linux distros. That said, in many situations systemd is better than what came before. Except systemd-networkd. It's a PITA as far as I'm concerned.

  • Apt repos are like that for several reasons, one of which is that it allows DNS based mirroring without having to share a certificate. Another is that back when apt started out, HTTPS was pretty rare.

  • I've done this before by packaging it in a snap. No filesystem access except its own snap directory, no network access because I didn't request it in the snapcraft.yaml, but yes GPU and audio access through the desktop plug.

  • I don't feel attacked by them, I feel irritated by some of them. The ones that irritate me are ones that repeat misinformation or otherwise harm the discourse, and that goes for memes that attack any distro like that.

Funny enough, arch is a distro I can't stand because of the (IMO) backwards and stupid ways it does a lot of things, making it harder to set up without any good reason. But I'm not out there spamming the place with "lol arch sux" memes about that.

  • Doesn't the trans person not respecting someone's chosen name make them no better than Haley?

Decency is a social contract. I'll default to being decent to others, but if they're not decent to those around them, I feel no qualms with being similarly indecent to them. The difference is that I only do that in response to their indecency and will happily stop if they start being decent. This is no different from the paradox of tolerance.
