  • both APT and Pacman are not the best solutions for beginners

Depends on your use case. You are focusing on gaming. There are also folks who only need to browse the web, check email, write a letter and print it. For them the GUI for installing software will do just fine. Heck, they might be fine after a default installation without installing more software.

  • The Arch Linux wiki is considered, by several Linux users including myself, as the best reference for troubleshooting and learning more about Linux, even when you're not using Arch Linux. For a gamer (which I'm not, btw) have a look at https://bazzite.gg/ and https://nobaraproject.org/ and there's Lemmy communities for linux_gaming

  • use the server matrix.org like everyone (which seems to work fine).

Suggesting to use matrix.org as "everyone" uses it ? There are other choices instead of making a big flagship instance bigger.

I have a Matrix account on https://tchncs.de since years. Though I don't use it often, the admin seems to do a good job and provides bridges.

  • Per default tor has a linux useragent. And I can’t seem to change it with the useragent switcher or with about config override. So yeah… even better.

As far as I know Tor browser defaults to a Windows useragent string since years. Just double-checked by visiting a website I maintain and checked its web-server log files :

    "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/115.0"

My results with LibreWolf are the same : also Windows. Plain Firefox shows the correct real OS Linux as useragent string.

  • Here a post with similar question and an answer from two years ago where the OP claims that using uid= did not work : https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/687764/mount-t-cifs-only-mounts-as-root-and-no-longer-honours-uid-and-gid

From that link the comment starting with this paragraph below may work :

It occurs to me that as (a) I'm the only one accessing this share and (b) mode changes are not written back to the CIFS filesystem anyway, it doesn't matter whether the mode is 777 or 755. Therefore, the following fixes the issue:

  • I do like the solution of the developer. Share the source code for those who want to compile and let those who want packages pay. And very good that the "shouting at open source developers" got some more attention again with this blog post. Too many people wanting to grab and demand but not give anything back. Time for a change!

  • Agreed. Nextcloud keeps turning itself in hype mode 😑 Remember their social app and "Nextcloud joins the Fediverse!". I think they even made that social app a recommended app for some time while it was barely usable. Not sure what the current state of the app is but I hear nothing about it I guess cause : new hypes!

  • Problem is that lots of people do not leave Tw(X)tter and are not intending to do so :( And some are on Mastodon sort of pretending to have left the Pigeon sh*t CEO product, but still posting mostly screenshots from the old site. Good thing is that some are pretty clear about having left and encouraging others to follow like here : https://mastodon.social/@dangillmor ->

Journalists, please leave Twitter and join the fediverse. Here's how to get started:
