  • I absolutely love how he waddles and rolls around and squeaks when he walks.

  • Thats a name I havent thought of in some time. I remember it more for its flash games and videos though I never browsed the forums.

  • Nuance in applying the BMI is important. Like I'm a short guy(how short I'll leave it up to you) and according to the BMI I'd be a "healthy" weight at 120lbs. I can assure you if I ever drop down to 120 I would look like and feel like death(and honestly if I drop like that I might be!) .

The BMI can be a useful tool but what is and isnt a healthy weight can vary so much(and thats not even getting into lean athletes who are muscular obese and how silly that is). People have different body types and even then if you are visibly fat and not just broad shouldered or big breasted you can still be healthy. There's definitely a point where people hit where you get too big and the health problems and mobility problems start coming, but where that line is can vary and it would be nice to see the BMI usage change. So we wont get doctors ignoring patient symptoms and problems and suggesting you lose weight when something is wrong.

  • *General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin considered much of the data and equipment on the LCS proprietary — a problem that the GAO has identified throughout the military. As a result, only their employees were allowed to do certain repairs, former officers said. This sometimes meant that contractors would go overseas to help, adding millions in travel costs and often delaying missions. The Navy recently purchased some of the data. A Navy spokesperson would not disclose the price “due to proprietary reasons.” *

I feel like there is a lot of outrageous stuff with these ships, but holy cow I feel like this is possibly the worst part of it all. How in gods name do you buy a piece of hardware thats meant for the military and load it up with "proprietary software" that only technicians from the manufacturer can work on. So the ship cant have their own tech or computer engineer work on it and instead they have to find a way to get some jackass from some private company to fly in at great expense.

Actually the government ordering one more 500 million dollar ship nobody wanted while so many public services go under funded and underutilized is also pretty terrible.

  • I noticed that since lemmy is still fairy small that comments can actually go a long way in bumping some stuff up in the hot and active sortings.

  • I feel like as a gamer the older internet communities were heavily influenced by abrasive and antisocial gamers and message boards like 4chan and something awful were sort of like a bottom layer of internet forums. The big message boards where like a level 0 of internet memes and culture that would then float up to the more mainstream layers of the internet.

The late 90s and 00s were also just an edgy time for "edgy" humor and edgy behavior and boundary pushing behavior and while some had a talent for towing the line while still being funny or thoughtful, we're talking a younger internet driven by mostly teens, tweens, and socially awkward young adults so we get the standard newgrounds flash video.

There were also small close knit communities of friends from around the world and happy parts of the internet, and more wholesome spaces, but the poison was already floating around the water in the well even before algorithms and bots were introduced to further enhance the churn and toxic behavior.

I think a good example of this is message board discussion on gamefaqs in the 00s. A few steps above 4chan in terms of attitude the Next Gen Gaming board was mostly just trolls trolling trolls and people arguing in bad faith. The general style of argument would be to quote and reply like every sentence in your post instead of just having like a good faith discussion.

  • Oh neat! Im happy to have learned the good news from a meme.

  • Naw man you're being needlessly abrasive and theyre right to call you out on it. No need to take people in bad faith and call them shills or act like someone having a different opinion than you is CRAZY!

  • Hmmm sounds like you're asking a lot. What if instead they continue to sell off their valuable IP and media library while also dissolving brands that have served them well for about 30 years and then also remove all trace of already produced shows and movies so that nobody can ever watch them again?

  • glasses are for eyes not ears .

  • A disclaimer: I havent played the game and probably wont for a few months to a year when its on steam sale so I'm going to just speak based on what the article is saying and experience with other games.

I think its a tricky balancing act to make when it comes to creating an open world game where you travel through space. Different games have approached it differently with some games opting to scale everything down super small and letting you suspend disbelief(like outer wilds) but that wouldnt work as well on a game like this. Other games go for the hub approach where your ship is a hub that connects you to different open maps on different planets. This approach also works in letting you travel the stars and lets the story do the heavy lifting of conveying scale, but it doesnt mesh with the bethesda open world style. Likewise it can also sometimes turn your ship into just a metroid style elevator and so instead of feeling how big the universe it you effortlessly fast travel across the galaxy. Other games fill the space by making big procedural generated never ending expanses, but that can be hit and miss and not really what a lot of people want in a game like this one.

I understand wanting to pad things out a little bit to prevent things from feeling toy like in the way that Outer Wilds did, but it does run the risk of just being boring and uninteresting and leave you wishing for a more "gamified" tighter experience or at least less openness and more zipping to the places that matter. That said if exploring is worthwhile it could make it less of a bummer. I think Wind Waker and breath of the Wild are good examples of this. Wind Waker's sailing was notoriously long and boring when it came out, however while most of the islands are small rocks, they all have something. Some secret, some rabbit hole leading to something interesting, a piece of heart, a chest of ruppies, SOMETHING. If you engage with it and mark your map along the way, and explore then the mostly empty map becomes a little more engaging.

Likewise Breath of the wild's map isnt full of little side stories and secret villages or anything so if you decide to go off into that distant peak it will usually be self motivation. That said the game does reward you every time even if it's not a huge reward. You will find ruins of some mysterious lost nation, you will find ruins referencing past zelda games, and shrines, and even a stupid little korok puzzle. The little gamified reward for exploring the area makes it less barren and worth exploring. So if it's more Wind waker island, or breath of the wild and less Mass Effect 1 I can see this empty areas working.

  • Or alternatively they can add similar to the mediacodecs and such check a "install the office and other helpful stuff"

  • I looked at a house that in addition to still having some knob and tube wiring had an abomination of exposed wires going haphazardly to a plug, and that plug into a surge protector/power strip. Im not sure where the other end of this thing terminated but suffice to say I was not impressed enough by their craftsmanship to put an offer down.

  • Hot damn how is this so perfect?

  • Sometimes theres traffic and the gps lets you know to avoid it!

  • Also while it's neat that they made the game as pretty as they did, this is at the end of the day an isometric turn based crpg. It shouldnt be that hard to scale down.

  • It's literally 1/3rd more expensive and thats not an insignificant amount. If your rent increased by 1/3rd tomorrow you'd probably be pissed and if you had a 33.33 percent chance of getting struck by lightning by stepping outside tomorrow you'd probably stay indoors that day.

  • Unfortunately meanings change over time and with context and from my american perspective comrade at best sounds sarcastic or like youre making fun of something. At worst it sounds like you're genuinely supporting more authoritative soviet style authoritarianism.

  • Im kind of shocked at some of the cities in the low vehicle ownership. Like for NYC I'm surprised it's still as high as it is, and then other NY cities Im surprised managed to make the cut at all. Like buffalo syracuse and rochester do not have good public transit. Buses exist and Buffalo even has a single subway line that goes down mainstreet to downtown, but hot damn is it not a very reliable way to get around.

This is more a testament to poverty in those areas than anything else.

  • It's probably like in the last action hero. The movie is about a kid who essentially falls into an over the top arnold schwarzenegger movie. At one point they go in a video rental shop and there is a cutout for a Terminator Movie, but it's starting Sylvester stalone instead. So it's probably something similar. Spok is replaced by some other non star trek reference.
