  • Damn, Waymo has been around for that long? TIL

Waymo's progress is probably a good indicator as to how far along we are with self driving cars IMO. Given that Waymo has their cars pretty thoroughly trained on set routes (well, even us humans need to learn or try various routes before we're fully confident on them sometimes), Cruise cheaping out on the whole training process is only going to accelerate their demise... especially when it's at the expense of pedestrians' safety

  • 2016/2017 by a close friend, that was probably the last time I've had any kind of truly deep conversation with anyone.

Something happened that caused feelings of betrayal and I've kind of not really allowed myself to be that vulnerable since then

  • Waymo cars seem to operate much more sensibly than Cruise ones from what I've watched and read... although IMO that is mainly down to the car calling it quits much sooner and asking for an operator to take control, and driving in a different environment in general.

Cruise on the other hand seems to just carry on anyway, unless its lidar is blocked 😳

  • I don't ☹️

There is a hidden LocationServices system app from Qualcomm that proxies the communication on some devices - however removing this causes a bootloop from what I've read, and would prevent Android from being able to identify your location even if it didn't cause a bootloop.

I use a Fairphone 3 though with a bunch of Google services in the stock OS disabled, so I've settled for just keeping my location data out of Google's hands

    Edit: add info

  • The Qualcomm chipset is making these requests, most likely for GPS almanac data (satellite positioning).

Older chipsets send these almanac requests to izatcloud.net, unencrypted, containing your IMEI. No idea if newer chipsets have improved things though.

  • That neighbor being in that situation at 40 sounds miserable - at least they were able to find some happiness thanks to you though 👌.

Pretty valid concern there about someone possibly making a bad decision based from advice when drunk... seems risky depending on where the other individual is/feels regarding life

When I'm drunk I ask stupid questions and that's it really 😂 things I usually keep to myself are all asked without any care in the world. Almost like the filter is removed
