  • From fraud and lies, yes they should

This is illegal in most parts of the world already though.

I'll admit I'm a filthy passer by who hasn't read the article - is the CEO suggesting taxpayers' money be used to compensate in these instances? I don't think rich people should be entitled to the same/similar amount of protection available for those on the opposite end of the wealth spectrum...

  • VLC can pretty much play everything - avi, avi+mjpeg, mov, mpeg, 3gp, flv, you name it. In some cases it can reconstruct corrupted videos and try to play them (typically AVI files)

There's another player called MPV if you want a second option just in-case though!

  • For opening Word documents, I'd highly recommend OnlyOffice. Has outstanding compatibility with documents originally created in Microsoft Word, and it's free on Flathub

Another alternative if you have an existing 365 subscription would be the online version of Word in your web browser.

If you're heavily into the 365 ecosystem though, do note that things like Onedrive compatibility aren't all the way there on linux, so you'd miss luxuries like right-clicking a file and getting a shareable link, or sending a file to someone directly from the file manager. For these you'll need to drag-n-drop the file into onedrive, or into your email app to send them.

Things like opening PDFs, viewing various video formats etc, are built-in and work flawlessly on pretty much all Linux distros. Support for opening encrypted PDF files should be flawless too, haven't had issues with these myself.

Would recommend Linux Mint, or Zorin OS, as both have a pretty similar look and feel when coming from Windows

  • I'm mono myself, but it's nice to read various experiences here of poly relationships.

I personally think i'm too selfish to survive in a poly environment though, and also I'm not really that interesting of a person in general - preferring time alone mostly.

Poly requires a ton of trust and communication, so for me it would fall down quickly with the wrong kind of partner(s)... especially as it takes me a while to trust others

  • The problem is, here I want to stay anonymous

All social media by nature isn't. You can only try to not make it associable with your IRL identity

IMO public vote data is a small price to pay for not being targeted by ads and followed all over the internet, considering the alternatives are non-federated ad platforms that watch how long you spend scrolling, looking at specific items etc, altering your feed & suggestions to make them more money...

there are laws making my critique a criminal offence. Yeah, right, they are this fragile [...] and a federated instance by your local CIA-thing can vaccuum it into their database once federated

Just be mindful of what you post - sign up at an instance located overseas, don't interact with communities for your geographic region, don't post pictures. Won't stop a subpoena, but layer Tor on top and the origin is unknown. Won't stop data mining, but if there's no geographic hints in your post history they are SOL IMO

  • I highly dislike Google.

However - their Calendar product is the only one that I like, and that's mainly because it can be shared easily with contacts, accessed from multiple devices, and change sound profiles on my Android automatically depending on the event. I have yet to find enough downtime to try out replacements and alternatives

A lot of people who may have previously liked Google products may have also been burned by their habit of dropping things spontaneously... R.I.P. Google Hangouts and Google Now

Edit: Gmail is also fine, but I changed to a different app on my phone so I could log into other IMAP email accounts too

  • Doesn't make much sense, because e.g. dbzer0 federates with Hexbear, unlike World.

IIRC, it's not exactly defederations being looked at, it's actually a specific category of censures logged to Fediseer by lemmy.world admins. The category that lemmy.world admins chose for ani.social is one that is banned on dbzer0.

Whichever bot is handling defederations on dbzer0 simply saw a new site in that category on lemmy.world's Fediseer and auto-defederated it too AFAIK

Hexbear is not in that category so is ignored by the bot
