  • The problem sort of is capitalism right? These public good projects should have public funding. Imagine if the public funding for open source software projects was like that of the Apollo program in the 60s (2.5% of gdp).

  • This is well articulated, thank you for this viewpoint.

I think these issues can be corrected in the long-term as the Lemmy devs are very responsive to new ideas (scaled sort, transfer to diff instance, etc).

That being said I think Lemmy needs some new active smaller communities to gain traction. /c/Technology is almost becoming too big and some small communities would be nice. Like !cranetrainexcavators@lemmy.world ;)

They're more a seed rather than a completed project. The hope is the future of social media is beyond the control of corporations.

  • Corporate Headquarters

Bitwarden, Inc. 1 North Calle Cesar Chavez Santa Barbara, CA 93103 Bitwarden, Inc. is the parent company of 8bit Solutions LLC

Something tells me they'll enshitiffy too. It would make me uneasy storing all my passwords with a for profit corp, on their servers.

  • Not very practical anymore. Would get caught in all sorts of things in cars/trains/bikes/planes or whatever mode of transportation you use. The common person in general tends to mean towards practicality > aesthetics in the long term.

    Function > form

  • You mean those mobile IV vans? Those are only in major cities and when you're suffering dehydration from like a stomach virus you don't have time to schedule an appointment if you're dying.

Treatment for dehydration should absolutely be added to free essential care under Obamacare, at a minimum.

  • The difference between the two conflicts is that the govt of Russia was the unprovoked aggressor in Ukraine, whereas in Israel, the Gaza govt (Hamas) was the unprovoked aggressor.

Israel has gone too far and the war needs to end but the two conflicts are not identical in every way.

  • A light blue "flawed democracy" is a more accurate description. Whereas Russia is a dark red authoritarian regime.

Things are rough in the US but they could get worse. Or better. It depends on whether or not people vote in every single election. Apathy breeds authoritarian regimes. Saying the country is a farce breeds apathy.

  • In politics you pick and choose your battles. Biden is a needed stepping stone to get a true progressive in 2028. After 8 years of Obama we almost elected Bernie if it wasn't for the corruption that happened in the primary process. 2028 is the year of progressives.

  • I mean your sample is not really representative of the entire US population, so who knows what's going to happen. I personally know no one who is not going to vote because, that would just be stupid to not participate in the democratic process.

A person's opinion does not matter if they do not vote, at least to those in power. 200 million people could not vote 'in protest'. Doesn't matter. Just means it's that much easier for a bad candidate to take power and gain more control of the executive, legislative, and judical branches of govt that controls many aspects of our lives.

  • I've been using both OSs for over 20 years and the ONLY reason I use windows is for CAD (just 2d). All the foss options have potential but are very poor options for a longtime autocad user. Wine implementation is currently broken/terrible. VM is sorta a fallback option but doesn't run as fast as a native windows machine.

I plan on switching to Librecad or something similar but it's like a 10/20 year plan and something tells me I'll have to develop the features I want myself.
