  • I try to remind myself that social media, and yes, that includes Lemmy, does not reflect the rest of the aspects of my life - which is overall positive.

Subscribe to the communities you like, and stick to your subscriptions' newsfeed. Much, much better experience.

  • Wait... is lemmy.ml really the flagship instance? I thought that was lemmy.world.

Here's how I see it: an instance becomes bullshit, all the rest of the instances defederate from them. It has happened in the past, it will keep happening in the future. Lemmy self-corrects.

And if it doesn't, welp, it will go the way of Slashdot, Digg and Reddit. I'd be okay with that.

  • And am I supposed to let other people be subject to that, too? Let people like that drag down Lemmy as a whole? Shouldn’t I have a nice and welcoming place on the internet for me and my friends?

It's.... Lemmy. One instance does not represent all of it. Move to a friendlier instance. That's the beauty of the fediverse.

And in the end, lemmy.ml, like many other instances, are run by its owners, technically for the fun of it. They're absorbing the cost. Not us. They can do whatever they want with their little toy server.

Look, I'm not defending them. They suck. I'm just saying that the internet is vast. Why focus of one small corner of it? Again, that's like trying to change 4chan. Or moving to a tornado area and trying to get rid of the tornadoes.

  • Saying "trees" is like saying "mammals."

Those trees from back then were different species of trees.

So, sure, mammals will survive, just like they survived the asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs. But we humans were not those mammals. And we won't be the mammals that survive our self-inflicted apocalypse.

    We will be long gone.

  • You're both right.

So I'll talk about a totally different point:

The day the MPAA and the RIAA sued fans for tens of thousands of dollars for pirating content that was still generating millions, is the day I said I would never, ever, pay for their content again, and pirate it guilty-free.

  • Edit: I also read the actual tweet. I think the author was responding to an "aha, gotcha!" moment. Someone posted a screenshot of them pirating his game with the caption "I love pirating indie games." It almost feels like a troll post. And the dev didn't bite the bait. He was like "eh, you do you. Devs gotta eat, sure, but you know what, culture should be accessible too."

    Your argument is weak.

    1. Ultrakill made the game to make money. Releasing a game "for free" for all makes no business sense.
    2. Plenty of publishers do release games for free. Though they hope sell players' data, or ads or add-ons.
    3. This dev is just one dev. Everyone else is free to do whatever they want.

    So, there.

It’s pretty easy for him to have a chill attitude and say it’s okay to pirate his game after making nearly $100 million on it.

This is true. I don't see a problem with that. Give me $100 million dollars. It will be pretty easy for me to do neat stuff that doesn't necessarily bring me profits.

Edit: Downvoted by corporate suits. On Lemmy of all places.

  • Bro. It's not "just more pressure." It's literally less pressure.

If there are water waves moving a boat up and down, and you actively apply some movement (ha! pressure!) to the water so you generate waves that cancel the existing ones so that the boat stands still, would you say "but you don't understand, the boat is getting MORE PRESSURE!!! It's being damaged!!!!"? Of course not. It's pretty much the same principle.

Get a highschool physics book, read the chapter about sound, and come back. Otherwise, just stop.
