  • You know, I'd 99% of the time agree with you but has anyone else tried out the little (travel?) routers from GL-iNet?

Their default router interface ain't half bad at all, and if you do need to use Luci you can simply do that too

I bought a couple of them for a family member and they haven't poked me once for help with them.

  • It's ridiculous they don't include either and I say that as someone who doesn't actually need either, really.

But it's nice to be able to backup my DCIM folder to the SDcard and then sync that via a network share on a regular basis, especially if I hadn't got adb enabled and/or I had a smashed screen?

It also allows me to just wipe my internal storage anytime without worry because I don't record many videos and photos take up fugg all storage with a 3.2.1 backup plan.

edit: What's the point of excluding, a headphone jack too I feel is the real question.

  • Hold on a second Mister OP, you missed the most important pros and cons.

Has an IR Blaster thank fuck, but, is missing a 3.5mm jack and SDCard.

I know these "cons" are meme complaints by now and while I've actually used Bluetooth earbuds before Android was a thing (see, jackless Sony Walkman W850....), but feel you should be including them as cons since many revel for those simple hardware bonuses we're used to from Xiaomi.

    Alas :(

  • Indeedys!

Exactly what I do and I feel the MVNO market here in the UK has kept things sane for quite a few years now. The problem exists when people take out "contract deals" and get themselves into "credit".

Also the fact we can now text our current operator for a PACode means we can jump between PAYG deals, monthly.

  • Even if my carrier tried charging me for a MMS, fools on me if they do succeed since I'm PAYG.

If they manage to fool you into paying for them? Fool on you for signing up to contracts that allow that behaviour. And the fact that you're looking for a solution to this is very "blinkered".

  • No doubt, and there used to be an app called "all for one IR remote" or something like that that I can't find from a cursory skim.

It allowed programming of codes from your existing remotes and also the bonus of using a URI for a IR code which then meant you could fire them off with other apps.

Problem these days is the hardware that supports IR Blasters is controlled by the likes of Xiaomi, and the apps available to use said hardware is limited to in-built system apps :/

  • I'd be curious how many account holders in the UK have actually been prosecuted for copyright infringement.

In nearly two decades with the same ISP (Telewest > Blueyonder > VirginMedia) I've had a grand total of two emails from them with no teeth in it, and still download what I want from public trackers to this day.

I get an actual letter from them? Yay, free toilet paper!

    *typo

  • I have two Rasp Pi Zero's stuck behind my TV that cost me £10+£10 DVB HAT's x 2 (before the COVID scalpers took effect) as a poor mans Homerun server that have plenty of storage - be that a new USB drive stuck in them or even using my NAS with NFS for storage.

    Device cost/viability isn't a thing here.

It's getting people signing up to a (e: tracking) service that'll be plastered with adverts every 15 mins? I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

  • They'll take my TVHeadend servers out of my cold dead hands if they think I'm signing up for that?

  • Main thing is Capt, you're here to tell us your best stories.

Tell us your most favourite food please, and how you came across it? Mine's carbonara and an Italian girlfriend who loved that shit.

  • I'm a lad from Bradford, in the UK.

    And it kinda rhymes.

  • Don't fret.

Things like this are #kllledbygoogle next year and some other intern will have a new product name to bolden their advert battalion.

The cycle never ends, and they don't click on that we ain't having it :/

  • I'm lost. Why is this ruining Android?

  • I'm just waiting for everything they haven't killed to merge onto YouTube

    Me and ye both.

Using the "website" YouTube in my mobile browser sucks and I have to disable their "app" because it's a system app for some reason or other, to then allow me to use a better app like Newpipe without their system app popping up in the share menu every time I get an update.

Speaking of updates my Xiaomi just updated to A14, and even thou

    I now get this....

    You couldn't make it up.

  • I had to leave VirginMoney because the lady on the phone told me I needed an iPhone to reset my password (seriously) even after trying with three separate Android devices.

There's no desktop functionality (mobile is king with them) and it amazed me that day I had to use the Current Account Switcher to go to an equally meh banking service.

Sorry state of affairs across all mobile apps to be honest and as seen by the prevalence of MDM and accessing data Vs doing the very same, on a desktop "PC". Why the data is more precious on a mobile device to them is telling.....
