  • As a Czech, I feel like many people forget that the Soviet Union demanded all the allies come to Czechoslovakia's aid and kick the Nazi menace in the bud as soon as they tried to subjugate us. Instead, the UK, USA, and most egregiously, Poland, stabbed us all in the back at the negotiating table while denying the Soviet Union a seat. The western allies were intent on bolstering Nazi Germany and Poland so that they could mount an invasion of the Soviet Union in order to 'free' more markets for Western exploitation. This necessitated conceding to Hitler's demands on the Sudetes and Danzig. Even more interestingly, it also necessitated giving Czechoslovak land to Poland, and some of these regions were quite important for steel production. Of course, the western powers were playing with fire. Hitler famously gave the Danzig or War speech, much to the surprise of Polish diplomats, who were actively in talks to cede Danzig to Germany in order to receive support for war against the Soviet Union (which they had already instigated once before, annexing an independent socialist government in Western Ukraine, and one in Belarus, both who were allied with the Soviet Union and later voted to join it). Turns out, Nazi Germany wasn't a fan of sharing spoils of war.

These things were all fairly obvious to people that lived in Eastern Europe back then, which is why so many Slavs turned to communism.

So to reiterate, anti-war positions are actually good. The west wanted this war, it simply backfired. If the West never jockeyed for this war posture due to a never-ending greed for increasing profits, its likely Hitler would have never gotten anything done and would have been a footnote.

This is what Czech textbooks generally teach about the war, and I'm partial to this interpretation, though I've read that they are changing them recently to 'revise' our historical narrative.

  • i dont think its right that cishet hexbear users are posting in this thread personally, i know some of them commented here for certain. i think its very fair for our LGBT users to post here against defederation, given it would split lemmy's largest lgbt groups. and acting like that is brigading is silly, you cant brigade your own real life community. i would say thats the majority of the people who are responding to this thread from hexbear, based on what i know of the lgbt community there.

  • idk what an antisemitic emoji would even be, i've never seen one used ever. we have emojis that have flags burning that are typically used whenever a country's government does something racist. someone proposed one for israel but we decided against it iirc because it had a star of david on it. and i doubt youre saying anything in good faith at this point, your account is 12 hours old and has only posted in this thread.

    relevant emojis

  • concerning imagery with fascist roots

? what is this exactly. ive been on hexbear since it was founded and havent seen anything like that. the emojis are much smaller on hexbear itself, there is some sort of bug where that doesnt transfer to other instances, many users have been made aware and we now try to spoiler tag the emojis.

the only thing i can think of were the cute little ghost pictures that the falange in spain created, but the lgbt community in spain and hexbear adopted as a 'fuck you' to the fascists. its like taking back the word queer.

  • this is a very vague post, and frankly i strongly doubt you were ever a communist given your basic lack of understanding of marxist principles, there is zero reason to lie about such things.

also im trans and am a czech communist so... it is incorrect to assume that everyone from formerly communist countries hate communism. and i obviously have strong 'familial connections' to communism, many of my relatives were partisans that directly killed nazis that invaded our home. it is my experience, at least in czechia, that the communists are the most likely to be LGBT friendly out of any political grouping, and i strongly believe that eastern europe would not be the homophobic cesspit it is now if it remained communist.

  • We were able to purge a lot of the dumb stuff out of CTH and made it better. There was a lot of chaser stuff on the old subreddit, I usually avoided comment sections there because itd make me too angry. The new mod team is very good though and obliterates transphobes and chasers on sight

  • I gotta tell you, I don't care about blahaj or hexbear as much as I care about trans people being able to talk about stuff. These are just means to an end, and why I value hexbear is because they get rid of transphobic and problematic comments the fastest so its easier to have nice conversations with other trans people. If you don't like particular people, just block them. They aren't saying anything transphobic/queerphobic if they're from hexbear because theyll be banned instantly, so its just personal taste / you disagree on politics at that point.

Idk if youre trans or not, but I feel like most trans people would understand this sentiment. Plus you know, we are engaging / creating content on this platform in other ways, its immaterial whether or not someone is a user here or there.

  • The Soviet Union pioneered many modern trans surgeries and research, particularly modern trans male surgeries. These were done in Riga for trans men with significant dysphoria and the bravery to deal with a largely queerphobic world. Remember to compare two countries from the same time period, gay and trans rights were never even thought of by any society at large in the 50s and 60s.

Also as an anecdote, my grandma was a party official in communist Czechoslovakia for a major union and had a lot of ploy in our region, almost everyone important knew her. She didn't know what being trans was until I came out to her. She immediately became the most supportive person in my life (outside of my amazing bf) and began advocating for trans and queer issues to her cadre of commie grandmas to great success. I fully believe that if the communists were still in control, LGBT rights would be much better in Eastern Europe. The issue with communists back then was largely ignorance and not knowing that anything LGBT even existed.

  • Posting a reply I just wrote elsewhere:

I'm trans and know people that live in China, their conditions are basically the same as the USA, but slightly better these days because they don't have a hate mob spreading lies about them in the media and trying to genocide them in select states like America does. In general, there is next to zero awareness about transness in China, whereas the opposite is true in America (they are highly aware and full of hate about it), so it is a different flavor of bad in that regard. The emphasis the government has on accessible affordable housing and food makes that aspect of transness easier than in America, though, the trans women I know in China all have their own safe place to live in.

Now Russia... yeah... they're doing what those American states were doing federally now. But Ukraine does similar too, unfortunately. Source: I'm Czech and can read/speak most slavic languages by virtue of that, I also have been part of an illegal network to help trans/queer refugees leave Russia and Ukraine. In this organization we would typically help people move to Prague, St. Petersburg (for people who cant leave Russia, this is the best choice of city), and in the east, to China, particularly Shanghai and Harbin (large russian community there). Language barrier and cost of living are huge factors in where we'd help people move. ::: spoiler spoiler
