  • Federation takes time and if you have no users on your own instance who have posted to certain communities on other instances to kickstart federating them, you may be missing out on a lot of stuff.

You really notice this when you're part of a small or inactive instance (like I am) and have to manually find communities and just post something in them to start seeing them populate.

The OPs stuff is also mostly NSFW material on NSFW communities; if you have those blocked you wouldn't see them.

  • Pretty sure you're thinking of AIDS, not poverty.

  • I guess back when they first made Chanel No. 5, that soap smell was more unique. That perfume is from 1921.

  • If, when playing a game or something, and someone says they "almost had me," I am compelled to respond with "you never had me. You never had your car."

  • you actually have to consume 5 litres of jizz to produce that 1 litre

    How is that a downside?

  • I'm all 'bout them Douglas Furries.

  • Has /r/Conservative been flooded with non-racists or something?

  • That's funny because the majority of Lemmy.World are people who left Reddit during the 3rd party app-ocolypse. Though I suppose many of them also saw Reddit becoming more and more pro-Nazi as time went on. The loss of the apps was just the kick in the pants needed to actually leave.

  • I choose to work nights when I can because I don't have a life anyway and prefer nights to day. I also actually like mornings; I just don't like waking up. Working nights allows me to enjoy the morning time, without having to deal with the 4 hours of feeling like shit (just how long it takes for me to feel energized after waking up) wasting the best time of day.

Also, a lot of places now offer a 10% increased pay differential if you work the night shift.

  • "The" asset browser could be any number of sources, some of which are not coupled to any specific engine. AAA games do also use already made shit, especially when it's an inconsequential background item like a TV. They just don't use them for the entire game.

  • In a similar vein, No Stupid Questions should have a name that clarifies that you're not supposed to try and craft the stupidest questions ever, but to treat all the questions as not being stupid in the first place and just answering them without judgment.

  • To be fair, Greek influences a lot of other languages. I had the thought the other day that if one were to learn Latin and Greek, they could probably do just fine in understanding a majority of other languages in use today since most of them derive so many of their words from those two languages.

  • Ok.

I take a real screenshot of a fake screenshot/edited website. How do you tell it's a fake when the screenshot shows it's an unedited, genuine screenshot?

This is already an issue with certain things. The Fresno Nightcrawlers come to mind. The OG video was analyzed to death and found that it wasn't edited or manipulated. However, that doesn't discount the use of practical effects to create the cryptid. Same with the famous Patterson footage of Bigfoot. The video is real; the subject isn't.

  • Honestly, that way for obtaining flair and shit would be preferable to spending actual money. Especially if I could turn them in for a physical Lemmy shirt to wear IRL.

  • According to Abe, one of the most time-consuming and labor-intensive parts of game development is coming up with the "hundreds of thousands of unique ideas" needed to create the in-game environment. For example, if you want to put a TV inside of your game, you can't just use an existing product as is – you need to think of a fictional TV design from scratch, including the manufacturer's logo and everything else about the object.

I can just go into the asset browser and find a whole slew of TVs I can just add to my game and either use them as-is, or tweak the look a bit to fit my aesthetic choice and not need to reinvent the wheel every damn time. It's such a small thing that's just filling out the background, that adding details like a fictional logo aren't necessary at all, unless it's actually relevant to the plot somehow. What the fuck is Abe smoking with that example?

It does make sense if you replace the word time with money. Paying all those artists to make all those little details for every little thing is costly. But AI will do it for free.

  • The only advice I ever took seriously from Joe Rogan was when he was still just doing comedy on stage and literally said "I am an idiot. Nobody should listen to me."

  • Makes me wonder how many Lemmy instances are running off AWS servers.
