  • The Klingons oversell their whole honorable warrior schtick, especially to outsiders. They're not a monoculture but it's far less "cool" to be a nerdy scientist in Klingon society than, say, Starfleet, but they've still got them. They're just not celebrated to the same degree. They pay for that by being a bit behind the tech curve, imo.

  • It makes some sense for business & enterprise stuff, but not for household/consumer computers & devices. That's just rent-seeking and forced obsolescence. There is no good reason a home computer from the past fifteen years should have security patches withheld because the manufacturers want people to throw them away and buy and brand new ones.

  • Honestly, a bit of both. It probably gets more hate than it deserves but there's a lot of pointless change just for the sake of changing things. It's better than Win10 on a Surface, touch screen and pen support have improved. But beyond that, I don't really see a reason to jump to it until they force the issue by ending support for 10.

  • Yes, but it's not an automatic invocation of WW3. Article 5 just requires the members to discuss the issue and decide what to do about it, which is what they're doing now. If there's consensus Russia did it, they'll do something proportional in response.

  • Yup, a friend recommended them to me and I'm really happy with them. I haven't quite gotten the hang of gauging my own speaking volume when I have them in at a loud bar or something but I'll figure it out with more practice.

  • Yes, this is totally a symbolic move and nothing has meaningfully changed at Unity. Riccitiello is probably walking away with many millions of dollars and the rest of the leadership team who were fully onboard with the new licensing plan are still there. Once the negative press dies down, Unity will try something equally shitty again.

Developers would be foolish to trust this company ever again.

  • Usually not, but I finally live somewhere with an Alamo nearby and those are a nice experience and they enforce good behavior. We don't see a lot of movies in the theater, but when we do, that's where we go and we've been going more often as a result.

  • I also find that a lot of theatres are too loud now, but maybe my ears are getting old.

I do too and I've probably damaged my hearing in my youth by being careless & invincible. I bought a set of fancy concert earplugs ($30ish) that protect hearing without muffling the sound and they were well worth it. They fit in a little capsule on my keychain so I've got them if I wind up someplace unexpectedly loud.

  • The Republicans want to end democracy and convert the US to an oppressive fascist oligarchy like Russia, but make no mistake. They are not underwater and they are a legitimate political party with all of the power, funding and infrastructure that comes with it.

They have near absolute control of the judiciary and strangleholds on most of the federal and state legislatures.

The Democrats need to equip themselves to compete with that but I fear they've squandered whatever technology edge they had. One vendor having the ability to screw their entire operation is proof of that.

  • So is fish sauce, miso paste, yaggi, marmite, better than bouillon, parmesan, mushrooms, tomato paste and many many more things.

And anytime you see hydrolyzed soy or wheat protein on an ingredient label.. that's just slightly less refined MSG.

  • Yes... but... this becomes one of those things that everyone should buy to be prepared but few actually do or they forget.

I keep a little crank-chargeable radio in our emergency kit but most people don't. If the cell networks go down (and they usually do in severe weather and most other big emergency situations) most people will lose all of their access to information.

  • I wholeheartedly agree, but I don't think there's any saving it at this point. Car manufacturers are dropping it from new models and that's the only actual AM/FM radio most people actually buy these days.

Same thing happened to the phone network. It used to actually be possible to call 911 when the power was out. The central stations all had battery banks and diesel generators. Unless the lines were cut, you had service.

  • The Universe probably wouldn't fit in a sphere of any size and it very well may be infinite.

But looking at a very large spherical region like the visible universe from our perspective here on Earth, everything is moving away from us. If objects were being pulled towards one particular edge of our imaginary sphere, it would look very different. We'd see a clear drift in that direction, but it all looks pretty even across every direction we look.

  • Not if the Dems agree to vote to keep him

That seems a tall order given his long history of biting the Dem's hands every time they reach out. This is a problem of his party's own making and stems from not honoring their earlier agreements around the debt ceiling.

Besides, they can't agree to something he hasn't (and won't) ask for.
