  • All you have to do is listen to Putin and Lavrov. There's a reason their true words are never presented in western media. Putin has been singing the same tune on NATO, the US, and Russia's desired place in the world since 2008 at least. Lavrov as well. Their requests have been clear and unchanging. The US and NATO on the other hand have escalated at every opportunity.

  • It's a heavy read but I'd really recommend Michael Hudson's Superimperialism for some background on this. It doesn't answer your questions directly, but it provides more of a framework to conceptualize dollar dominance and dedollarization. Hudson has also been on Geopolitical Economy Report a lot this year talking about this as well.

  • The leadership absolutely saw this coming, not only that but they have aided the whole process. Current cabinet members such as Baerbock and Habek were trained by US institutions to serve those institutions and the US capitalist class.

  • It must be said that while the French did do well to choose nuclear, their fuel comes in large part from colonial resource extraction arrangements in Africa. Hardly secure, although much more reliable and environmentally friendly than coal or gas.

  • France imports solar electricity from Germany during the day because Germany installed too much solar without the necessary storage capacity. This power is often sold at a negative price because it's not needed but must go somewhere. Germany imports nuclear electricity from France and coal electricity from Czechia and Poland at night because it doesn't have enough baseload capacity.

  • Let's be real here, the Federal Republc of Germany has done nothing of importance since 1945 without at least consent, if not by the instruction, of the US empire. The post war industrialization was funded with US capital for the benefit of the US capitalist class, and now the deindustrialization is for the benefit (at least they perceive it this way) of the US capitalist class.

I think it would be more than embarrassing, it would be destabilizing to admit that the Federal Republic is ultimately little more than a US vassal.

  • According to the summary it's Ilya Budraitskis. I'm not familiar with the name, but a quick search shows that he writes regularly for OpenDemocracy affiliated projects. To be completely honest I'm not surprised an outlet like DemocracyNow has someone like that on.

  • There will certainly be cheaper Mate 60 Lite and a cheaper Honor version or two in the coming months. Previous models have been available in Europe but I can't imagine they sell all that well anymore considering the Google embargo. Doesn't bother me personally but the average user would be lost.

  • When I have need of a new laptop a Matebook is definitely in the running.

In terms of smart phones I used to go through one every nine months or so. I'm not hard on them but something would just give up. I'm typing this comment on a five year old Mate 10 Pro which has got at least a year left if not more. I've had the battery replaced twice and the USB port once but other than those wear items it's a rock solid device.

  • I work very closely with two people from the DDR who were in uni when it was annexed. I don't think I've heard them say a good word about the east in the three years I've known them. Even normal everyday things that we also deal with in the capitalist west are said in a tone or phrasing that implies the east was a particularly bad place. The company also has factories in the former east and I regularly hear things that have totally banal explanations but which are presented as DDR was a horrendous oppressive dictatorship. Meanwhile the one guy praises the business acumen of robber barons like Musk and Bezos constantly.

  • They didn't even bother to hide it. Within months if not weeks of the beginning of the SMO small arms ostensibly shipped to Ukraine were showing up in the middle east. I can't remember where the article was now but last year sometime a Balt official was on record basically laughing about millions of euros of "missing" financial and weapons aid, saying everyone knows and nobody cares. This is absolutely a Gladio/ISIS/Mujahideen type scenario.

  • Ironically May 1st labour day has a lot of history in the US (was even started there by some accounts), but now some of the amerikkkans I know call May 1st a commie holiday (tongue in cheek but still).
