  • Good that those things are taught in some places. I can only speak from my own experience in high school - we were required to have laptops for school but were never taught how to be safe online.

  • Some people put their whole lives on the internet and never once stop to think if it's a good idea. Then again, online safety and security are never taught or communicated, at least in the west, maybe by design.

  • This reminds me in broad strokes of the thesis of Sakai's Settlers, which is roughly contemporary. In the introduction Sakai similarly calls out social sciences like "African American studies" and "Asian American studies" for what they are, the societal position and historiography of these peoples from the perspective of the white settler. Settlers thus aims to discuss the white settler in similar terms, ie. as the subject of such "science."

  • Varoufakis is just one of many people who have come up with fancy new terms for capitalism and imperialism. It's not to say that he doesn't have an important perspective on some things, but coming up with new terms for things defined over a century ago only serves to distract.

  • The trend to shutting out China from the west started with Obama's "Pivot to Asia." At this point the only point of contention between US ruling elites is whether China or Russia is the primary threat.

  • It's like Rosa Luxembourg put it over a century ago: the choice we have is between socialism or barbarism.

Or, to paraphrase MLK and other mid-century Black activists, the white liberal is the biggest block in the way of genuine progress.

  • If we want to exclude athletes from international competition just because the ruling class in the country they happen to have been born in undertakes military action, that's fine. We just have to be consistent about it. I'd like to see athletes from the US, Isreal, UK, France, Canada, and many other countries treated the same way the west is currently treating Russian and Belorussian athletes.
