This is just describing capitalism.

The EU was never designed to be a democratic body.

They tried chat control and got pushed back on, so they gave up on that track and quickly switched to a sneaky effort to break SSL.

Just as previous initiatives were voted down by the people, but forced through the parliament anyway.

The EU exists to protect private property and capital, not to benefit the people.

I don't think I can agree with that.

Of course the capitalist class generally know what they're doing, but that's not who I was talking about.

I meant that everyday working people have a material interest in more or less keeping the status quo. I'm not sure that you can define this group as sociopaths.

It's not just Koolaid.

The relative domestic prosperity of the US is built upon that very overseas death and exploitation.

The people of the imperial core have some material interest in keeping that system of oppression going, even if they don't realize it or think about it in those terms.

It's neat how it's so easy for capitalist governments to authorize money for killing people, but when it comes to social spending there isn't even a penny to spare.

The German finance minister has been gleeful up on his high horse preventing additional spending on important things Germans need, but approved a €100B special fund for the military in 2022 outside of the bounds of the federal budget.

I think it's also worth mentioning that most of the US "aid" is actually loans. Even their food aid comes with real strong strings attached. The US owns Ukraine at this point. Although I'd don't know how German aid spending or military spending in support of Israel in general is structured.

But there's no additional money available for infrastructure and social services within Germany. Something something Bundeshaushalt excuse and EU federal debt limit.

They'll stop after the revolution.

I really think it has less to do with the Holocaust and more to do with the material interests of the German capitalist class. Especially now when cheap Russian energy is off the table, so cheapish Middle Eastern energy will have to do. The only way that cheapish energy is readily available is if the US' Middle Eastern aircraft carrier and forward operating base is open for business.

Repentance for the crimes of the past is just a really convenient way the same capitalist class can get the plebs on board with their imperial designs.

Watch Belgium get into trouble at the EU and NATO for even suggesting this.

Western countries industrialized with policies like these and import substitution. They succeeded and promptly pulled the ladder up for everyone else to maintain their systems of exploitation.

As far as I understand, this subscription "option" comes from a couple EU member state data protection agencies saying that the "choice" between give up all your personal information or don't use the service isn't good enough.

It remains to be seen if give up all your personal information or pay and still give up all your personal information will be accepted by those and other regulators. I can't imagine it will be.

Yep, with a reactionary coup, because a non-capitalist alternative was just too threatening. One of the biggest tragedies of the 20th century, for reasons already briefly detailed in other comments here.

The neoliberal era has absolutely gutted labour power. As far as I can tell, organized labour is basically getting everything in their power at this point.

Even in Germany the metalworkers Union IG Metall, which calls itself the biggest labour union in the world, has only been able to get raises about equal to inflation.

A bunch of it will ultimately go to Blackrock. Another chunk to the murder machines industry. If any of it is actually spent abroad and not just used to send domestic weapons and other goods away, those dollars will cycle back and fund next year's budget deficit.
