  • I started my Linux journey with a Raspberry Pi and Debian based PiOS four years ago and I haven't felt the need to mess with that. Since then I have added other machines running other distros, but the Pi running PiOS is always on and always reliable.

  • If compromising the privacy of millions of people is an acceptable alternative to an incredibly infrequent act which can already be perpetrated by other more anonymous means and can be easily mitigated by various socio-economic policies, have at it I guess.

  • I set it up using a docker image based on the older Firefox sync repo. It's outdated but it works. What I don't self host is authentication as it is way more involved than I prefer my self hosting projects to be and I'd probably end up frustrated by some little thing not working.

  • Precisely this. The fuss about Chinese telecom hardware spying on you is made up by US intelligence because they want to be the ones who get to spy on you and keep their back doors in your products

  • I've had a Huawei for years and I love it. The only telemetry I've noticed is from Google services and other third party apps I've installed. I use a firewall to block network access to apps that don't need it.

  • He wrote some academic sounding russophobic and anti-communist drivel so now he gets placed on the NYT bestseller list and has a running gig on cable news.

Academia provides cover for the ruling class, he's but one example.

Unfortunately in my lib years I bought his book On Tyranny and later gifted it to my grandfather, who has been quite a fan ever since. Every time he brings it up now I cringe.

  • I applied for a new job yesterday and got an interview invitation today! I've been procrastinating applying for a new job for months because I don't have formal qualifications and writing applications makes me anxious so I'm extra excited!

I learned that I don't need wait around in a miserable company just cause I don't feel so confident about my chances.

  • The phrase "final solution" may stem from the first independent Canadian administration. The Canadian PM in the 1930s thought Hitler was a pretty cool guy doing good things and went to visit Germany in 1937 to meet Hitler. After the war, Nazis and collaborators were let into Canada in droves. The very politically powerful Ukranian diaspora lobby descends from some of these people, many of whom couldn't provide papers to immigrate but could show their Nazi tattoos to prove they would be of help against the spectre of communism.

The RCMP, the Canadian federal police, were founded to oppress Indigenous people.

Indigenous people on reserves live like people in the poorest developing countries: lack of clean water, little heat, poor healthcare, no agency. When they do take action the RCMP shows up with heavy weapons go make them stop, or allows things like the Highway of Tears to keep happening.

That's just the tip of the iceberg, and doesn't go into the material reasons for why Canada is indeed fascist.

Canada has a liberal democratic political system, that's true, but that has no bearing on what the primary ideology is of the ruling class and their representatives in parliament.

It's also not true that the British commonwealth, Canada included, fought WWII to stop the Nazis because of their crimes against humanity. Britain fought against the Nazis because British capitalists needed the resources and capital control just as much as German capitalists did, and if they didn't fight their empire and profit streams would have been taken away from them.

I'll remind you that Germany was a democracy in the early 1930s as well, but that didn't prevent the German industrial and financial capitalists from using their power over the country to get the NSDAP into a very profitable position.

  • I don't see anything in there which points to Khan being fascist. I agree that he's no saint, but was a whole lot better than the US-backed military regimes Pakistan has now and has often had going all the way back to independence.

Taking control of the countries' institutions and making trade deals that benefit the people of the countries involved rather than western capitalists is the first step towards national liberation, and that's what I understand Khan tried to do, even if he was at times hamfisted about it. That's also why he ended up getting couped and now faces trumped up charges.

  • Second kitchen knives. I use exclusively handmade Japanese carbon steel knives now and will never go back. When I have to cut something at someone's else's home or a vacation place I just cringe and suffer. Even the supposedly high quality German stainless chef's knife someone gifted me once just isn't it, I never touch it.
